Excellent workout!

This program contains 3 DVDs.

DVD 1: Booty Basics, Bum Bum, Bum Bum Rapido and Bum Bum Live.

Booty Basics teaches you most moves in slower pace, preparing you for all other workouts. it really does help to follow Leandro's pace later on it you take your time to review Booty basics before you start.

Bum Bum is Leandro Carvalho's signature workout concentrating on working the butt, consists of squats, lunges, one of his signature moves called ipanema walk etc. It is pretty tough, it took me couple of trials untill i could finish that one. 30 minutes

Bum Bum rapido is a shorter version of Bum Bum - 10 minutes. Contains a lot of leg lifts, squats, some jumps. it is a really good workout and it's short so it's good for beginners. i started it 6 weeks after giving birth and love it because I was very out of shape but was still able to complete it and I did feel the difference right away.

Bum Bum Live - never watched

DVD 2: Sculpt, High & Tight

Sculpt is a 45 minutes workout using weights, working upper body, core, legs and back

High & Tight is about 35 minutes long and is my favorite workout using bands. it consists of 3 parts: standing workout using bands, floor work using bands, and floor work using ankle weight. it mostly works out leggs and butt. After this omne you can really feel qabove mentioned areas burning. I loved the bands!

DVD 3: Cardio Axe, tummy tuck

Cardio Axe - 45 minute cardio dance workout. So far i haven't tried it

Tummy Tuck - concentrates on abs. To be honest I've seen better workouts for the abs and I'd recommend P90x Ab ripper x instead. Much more effective

I have been using one of the programs from [...] and so far I've been using it for a little over a week but I already see my legs getting more definition. I just had a baby and pregnancy really took a toll on my body and I am very excited to see an improvement!

I have read other reviews saying that Leandro is hard to follow but I did not have any difficulty following after the second time i used the DVDs. Also it helped that I reviewed Booty Basics in the very beginning.

Good workout! Difficult for those out of shape, but I feel I will need somethine more later. Meaning that it will get easy quickly. Most workouts are about an hour long, because you are to use two different workout on most days.
I have started to see some changes in my rear after only working out about 5 times.

Great workout that really makes your body change!

I have just finished my first week of the Pear Solution cycle, and I am loving it. I was really jealous of the lean and toned bodies other people got from this workout. Plus, I was nearing a size 10 when I used to be size 6.

So far, my booty seems to be "rearranging" itself slowly, but steadily. I lost half an inch off my hips being already at normal BMI, and it's only been one week. However, the workouts were not easy, and they are definitely not for people who are really out of shape. I liked all the sections. They are mostly fast paced and you will need to be patient and not expect to be able to move like the girls in the videos right away. I had to pace myself and take 10 second breaks when I was feeling dizzy in order to go through the cardio parts, but believe me, it's absolutely worth it! Leandro is a very engaging trainer and he's not annoying at all (unless you just hate working out, lol).

I think if you are unhappy with your booty, you should try it. However, if you don't eat right, you won't get the results. You simply have to eat as much organic food as you can get. I also wouldn't rely on crazy shakes or diet supplements, but that's your choice. I think that eating fresh food, little sugar, lots of whole grains (carbs, yes!) and low fat diary products is far more healthy.

Also, you *will* sabotage your results if you:
- Drink lots of alcohol
- Smoke
- Drink sodas or reward yourself with chocolate bars after each workout
- Hit Starbucks too hard (caffeine washes calcium out of your bones)
- Eat more than you use up. I followed the Urban Skinny book to figure out my energy needs and portion sizes. I highly recommend it.

One more thing - do not follow the suggested Supermodel Slim Down plan, please! It will undermine your long term success. Whoever thought that eating only a 1000 cal a week is enough for a training woman must be nuts. At my height and weights I need about 1500 cal just to stay alive at rest, let alone work and exercise. You will lose a lot of water and then quickly regain it all in fat through binging, so be careful with it. Best results are slow and steady results.

UPDATE 09/01/2010
I am one workout away from finishing week 2, and I've passed the pencil test, yay! So far I've lost about an inch off my hips and half an inch off my thighs, although I managed to overeat twice (stress). No idea what my weight is (I don't own a scale), but my skinny pants that used to be tight now slide off my butt. Also, I ended up ditching the good ol' breakfast-lunch-dinner pattern and started eating a little every three hours. That solved my energy issues.


GREAT workout, some questionable moves...

Don't get me wrong, this system is a great workout. I definitely felt the burn! However, some of the moves may be a little too advanced for some who are not familiar with yoga or pilates. Some of the moves are not eased into enough so that you don't throw your back out! For example, there is a backbend at the end of the Tummy Tuck DVD that could be dangerous for some who are not as limber. Overall, this is a high intensity workout (even the basics's DVD) that could potentially transform your rear end. Also, you must somewhat practice some of the workouts before you can jump into the whole routine. I say this because the workouts are pretty fast paced and you could be hastily doing some of the movements just to keep up...and this is how you get hurt.


OMG IT really works

Anyone, ANYONE trying to loose weight, OR gain weight, or simply looking for an awesome work out session should invest in these DVD's. It really works. My goal was to gain muscle (or some) since I am a skinny girl, and my metabolism is 'uber' high. After only 2 weeks of excercises, proper eating and lots of determination, I gained 2 lbs. and increased my thigh size approx 3 cm. I couldn't be happier! BEST invesment I have done in a while! The Wave Rocks

I am 67 years old and have lived in a beach city my entire life. This exercise tool truly simulates surfing, without the water and associated fear of sharks or drowning. The exercises portrayed on the accompaning DVD's offer a full body work-out and excellent instruction. I have also found that the Wave is a wonderful tool for the improvement of balance. It forces one to stand straight with knees slightly bent. The best part is that is really fun to use!!

All about butt and thighs... very little upper body exercise

I was really disappointed in this workout system. The main focus is butt and thighs and hardly any of the video is dedicated to core or upper body. I don't think this is a very well rounded workout. Also, the wave board is frustrating. I was constantly have to put the board back on the mat as it does not stay in place. I will stick to Core Secrets.

This was my third Leslie exercise DVD. I've owned it for one month now and it has quickly become my favorite. Excellent workout with the boosted walking segments and super strength training with the firm band. On Weight Watchers for four months and had hit that plateau to where I couldn't move the scale much anymore...this is doing it! The only thing that would make this DVD perfect would be if it had an option to turn off Leslie's constant chatter. She talks way more in this one that the other two I have. By this point we've got the steps, Leslie. The music is great - it's ok to just lead the workout and leave me to my own thoughts! Thanks - Lisa

Four fast miles-- high calorie burn.

I liked this DVD much better than Leslie Sansone - Walk Away the Pounds - Super Fat Burning - 3 Miles or Leslie Sansone - Walk Away the Pounds Express - Super Challenge. Of course those tapes are considered to be beginning or intermediate level workouts. Leslie Sansone Walk Slim: Fast and Firm 4 Really Big Miles, Leslie Sansone: Walk at Home - 5 Mile Fat Burning Walk and Leslie Sansone's Walk Slim - 4 Fast Miles (2-Disc Set) have all been recommended for intermediate to advanced level exercisers. Boy, and can you tell the difference! This is the first of the group I have tried having been exposed to it at an exercise class of St Theresa Catholic Church in Sunny Hills, Florida. As Leslie Sansone herself says "Even the warm-up is a little peppy."

I don't know if it is this particular DVD or one of the others I cited but at least one of them introduces the audience to "boosted walking" or mild or gentle jogging. Most of this indoor walking tape is done to a 3-4 MPH walking pace. In the second mile it speeds up to a 12 minute mile and in the third mile a 10 minute mile. As Leslie says "You don't have to worry about following the steps. Just keep pace with the music." This is so true and so stress relieving. Unlike some of the FIRM tapes where these very young, very skinny instructors force you to learn complex moves just to keep up with them, Leslie's instructions are simple but effective. I can FEEL myself start to sweat! She admits herself: "This is not about being perfect. This is about getting a good,healthy workout."


Really Fun!!!

I have many of Leslie's work out DVD's and I love them all. The three mile ones were getting a bit too easy so I decided to try 4 miles. This DVD is so fun that I hardly noticed that it was an extra mile. I worked hard and felt great afterward but it went by very quickly!! She introduces some new fun moves that made the workout unique from some of the others. Can't wait to do it tomorrow!!


I like it, but hate the music.

I love Leslie Sanson Walking Videos. This particular DVD does not do it for me. I think it is the music..the very first song turns me off. I need music that motivates me and makes me want continue to work out just because of the music. There is only one song in the DVD that I like and it is at mile 4 and it is the last song before the cool down. I tried using mute but then I get off cue because I don't know when she is going change the steps. I still do the workout because it is a great workout but I suffer through the music.

Good for the taller athlete

This is my second purchase of this Xercise Ball. The first Ball developed an outpouching which eventually blew while a co-worker was sitting on the ball.

First recommendation, inspect the ball carefully to ensure it is flawless. Then monitor the condition of the ball, and if the outer skin begins to peel, replace it!

I do purchase a new ball far enough in advance to 'air' out for about three months on the porch before I bring it indoors for use. The new plastic smell is pretty intense fresh out of the box.

I use the ball every day in some pretty demanding circumstances, so for it to last a year is pretty impressive.

This is the ideal circumference for a taller person to use. At six foot plus, it's much easier on the physique than a smaller cm Ball. Quality product.

I am completely disatisfied with this purchase. I ordered 2 gray exercise balls and they sent me red instead. I have contacted them via email and gotten no response. I don't have a telephone number for them but I am going to call my credit card company and refuse to pay the charge if I don't get this resolved in the next few days!

This is my FAVORITE workout!

No matter what new work out or DVD or class or project I take on, I always come back to the Firm. The exercises are so simple and yet so effective. It's easy to add more difficulty by modifying the moves or using heavier weights. It's also great to use in between different workouts. Right now I use JUST the cardio portions (because I love Jen Carman) to get warmed up and moving and then do the 30 Day Shred. Gives me a Good 40 minute workout. I'm usually sweating buckets and bone tired!


No beginner

This is NOT for beginners. They are way too quick to be able to follow. Yet I can follow other videos without problem. If you're a beginner, get either another of the Firm "Basics": Abs, Buns & Thighs Workout. Or you can also try Cardio for Beginners with Petra Kolber--both titles available at Amazon, by the way.


Good Beginning intro to The Firm

I started doing the "Firm Basics" again along Leslie Sansone after not exercising regularly for a while. This series teaches proper form, and is a good intro to the "The Firm". While it is probably too easy for high-intermediate and advanced exercisers, it is definitely great for beginners. I plan to advance further with other "Firm" workouts. I feel they offer the best all-around fitness program and you can grow with it. I wish this series was offered on DVD.


Not just for beginners!

It's true that this is probably a more challenging workout if you're a beginner. However, I often use this workout on days when I'm just not feeling energetic enough to do one of the FIRM's more advanced tapes. I still get a decent workout, and I'm not worried about injuring myself by doing more than my body is ready to do. Also, you can use heavier weights on some of the exercises to make it more challenging.

Once you're feeling more fit and more comfortable with the FIRM, you should probably try some of the tougher FIRM workouts. Keep this in your FIRM rotation, though! It's a great complement to all of the other FIRM tapes and DVDs.


Really for beginners

- I had already been exercising for about 5 weeks with the Susan Harris, Jayne Poteet, Standing Legs, and Upper Body firm videos when I tried this. I didn't even break a sweat, and I couldn't hit my target heart rate. This isn't really a bad thing but it would be more accurate to label the video "For beginners". In fact, if you're a beginner, then try this first. It'll give you an idea of what the Firm videos do and how they do it, and it'll prep you for the harder videos.

Been using it since 1998!

I LOVE this five-day abs tape by THE FIRM. I've been using it for more than 10 years. I like that there are five different workouts. None of them are more than 9 minutes. So when I'm rushing around getting ready for work in the morning, I know I have time to do my ab workout if I still have 6 to 9 minutes left before I need to leave the house. It helps me rush to be ready on time because I don't want to miss the workout. The music to the videos is a bit cheesy/dated-sounding, but the ab exercises are well choreographed to the music. So the music, cheesy as it may be, makes a lot of sense and helps you get through the workout! Also, I can do abs on my own, of course, but when I do, I end up resting and daydreaming a lot in between and before I know it I may end up taking 20 minutes to do the workout. With the FIVE-DAY ABS tape, I just press play, lie down on the floor, GET THE AB WORK DONE, and then I'm up and outta there .... on my way to work. No time to dawdle! It is perfect for me.

Also, I like that there is a different workout each day, so I don't get bored doing the same thing every day. It's just enough variety, and very effective, which is why I keep at it.

Several years ago, I got a tiny little voice recorder and used it to save the audio for all five sessions. It makes it easy for me to keep doing my abs while I'm traveling. Recently my VHS tape that I use at home has disappeared. I don't know how! It must have fallen down behind somewhere, but I can't find it! I went searching for it online ... thankfully, I found the DVD version of the tape at amazon so I'm going to buy that. I LOVE THIS WORKOUT. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm still using this 60 years from now. At least I hope I'll live that long. :)


Best Ab workout I've tried

This is ABsolutely (haha!) the best ab workout tape I've used! Just simple, effective, difficult but do-able ab exercises, some fitness tapes try to hard to be inventive... gimmicky awkward workouts are impossible to stick to in the long run. But this is just clean, easy to follow ab routines that are short enough to fit into you daily routine. I've been doing 1-2 workouts from this tape every morning for years and I'm still not bored with it!

If you want an ab workout you can actually stick to and stay motivated, this is it!!

This tape annoys me

Okay, so the exercises ARE good. The abs exercises on most of the FIRM tapes that have them ARE good. But I still think it was a mistake ordering this tape for two reasons:
1. It's just a collection of routines from other, earlier FIRM tapes, so to me it pretty much seems like a rip-off. Also, get ready for some OLD ones there - from the time when instructors looked like Kate Moss and even guys were wearing pink and orange aerobics clothes. If you ever felt like you didn't quite enjoy looking at such things anymore - well, then you'll find this tape a visual disaster.
2. Who is this Tracy guy, for heaven's sake?! All he does is introducing the sets of exercises - half naked and looking as unnatural as a diamond ring on a homeless guy's pinky. He's ridiculous, but he's actually too annoying for me to be able to simply laugh at him.
Altogether, this tape was a disappointment and the two stars are strictly for the exercises.

The Firm-Volume One

So...yes, she's wearing a yellow leotard and legwarmers but if you can get past that-WHAT A FANTASTIC WORKOUT! This is a tape(literally, since to my knowledge it was never made into a DVD!) that I go back to whenever I'm in a workout funk. It kicks my butt...every time...regardless of how good or bad my fitness level is because I adjust the amount of weight I can handle at any given time. It is an hour long but it works EVERY SINGLE muscle in that time. The aerobic phases are on the shorter side but the weight training will insure you keep your heart pumping and you WILL always reach muscle failure. The moves are NOT hokey or bouncy and dancelike as you would expect of the time period(ok...so MAYBE a TOTAL of 3 minutes of the 60 are but it provides the entertainment portion of the workout along with all the great outfits and short shorts!!) It's just good, solid constant weight lifting with some aerobics and abs. If you still have a VCR, give it a shot...you'll be sore but you won't regret it. A solid 5 stars...I keep coming back.

Way too much food

This program required you to eat 6 meals a day. Calories around 1600. My husband and I were doing this diet together and after one month, we both gained 3 pounds. I cut calories for each day to prevent gaining since I knew that 1600 would be way too much.I fixed the recipes exactly as required, no extra amounts. We couldn't eat all that was required. Then it seemed like all we did all day was try to get menus ready, eat a ton of food and then eat more food. They only require 20 minutes of strength training three times a week along with all this food. That doesn't even help to burn off. I did my treadmill along with that, and still gained. Guess this program just wasn't for me.

I have done almost every program out there. Spark peoples program is free and lets you follow any program that you want. That is where I counted calories, and tracked my exercise. I lost 13 pounds. Can't wait to re-lose it after abs diet program!


Get this book!

I cannot say enough about how wonderful "The Abs Diet for Women" is. It's not really fair to call it a diet book. This is really a "learn an incredible amount of information about nutrition and learn how to live a healthy life" book. I began eating 5 times a day (three small-medium meals with mid-morning and afternoon snacks) and have already lost 7.5 pounds over the past 2 weeks. The power foods make perfect sense and are very easy to incorporate into every meal. I don't do the smoothies because of food allergies but I was able to take the core principles I learned from this book and am already seeing great success. The exercises are great and I love that the author tailored them to individual body styles. Whether you want to lose weight or simply learn more about nutrition and fitness, this is the book for you!!


Great all-inclusive Abs Diet Tome for Women

This book brings together the different components of the Abs Diet lifestyle and handily combines them all, serving as a great reference guide.
True to Abs Diet style, inspirational true stories are peppered throughout the book, prompting the "why didn't I find this sooner" thought.
There are several variations on the meal plans that put together real-life examples of how the Abs Diet looks across a couple weeks and highlights how many options there are, never leaving you feeling like you're eating the same stuff all the time.
Also included are specific exercises and plans for women - dealing with menstrual issues, pre- and post- pregnancy, menopause.
If I had one wish, it would be that the exercise pages were glossy coated pages with color photos. However I love that this book is paperback and has a smaller profile, so wouldn't want to give that up.

Outcome a delightful surprise

I've just discovered I have severe osteoporosis, and a dear friend (also with this condition) has been improving her health based on an exercise program that relies heavily on the exercises in this book. She had me over to learn her regimen. Amazon is where I went immediately to order up my own copy, but I could only find the book sold used at prices ranging from one cent to several dollars. The condition was listed as "good" if I remember. I thought, "OK, at one cent, I can order a more expensive book later if this arrives trashed". Well, it was in first-rate condition - not a tear, no underlining, no creases, nothing revealing past use. It appears to have never been used. I'd go this route again in a heartbeat.


This Book Gave Me Back My Pre-Baby Body!!!

To be honest, my body looks even better than it did in high school. I had picked this book up when I was 20 years old and pregnant (this is William's wife Jen) and I was already planning ahead to try to get a descent body back. All of the women in my family had basically let themselves go after popping out a kid, and I didn't want people thinking that I was pregnant three years after the baby had been born. I started working with this book (almost all weight training with very little cardio, maybe 2 hours of step aerobics a week) when my baby was 2 weeks old, and I followed a sensible diet (not the one in this book since I'm a veggie, but something similar). By the time I had my next doctor's appointment (6 weeks postbirth), my weight was lower than prior to pregnancy, my body looked better than when I had been in high school, and my blood pressure was the lowest that it had ever been. This book and its philosophy has given me the best body of my life (not to mention more time for myself and the kids since I don't have to do endless hours of ineffective cardio)! My husband loves my cut but not massive body and girls ten younger ask me how did I get into such great shape. After this book I moved on to the "Perfect Parts" which gives greater results, but this is definitiely the one to begin with.

I first found this at the library, and decided I needed it for "the long term", so purchased on Amazon.com. The book is terrific, easy on my 70 years old muscles. I have gotten into walking through the pastures and woods near my home. I feel better and am sleeping better too. Why didn't I do this earlier????

The biggest plus - no expensive excercise equipment to buy, to take up space in my home. Dumb Bells are all you need. WOW - how refreshing.

Great Intro to Increasing you metabolism

I have hit that phase in my life where my metabolism has drastically slowed down, leaving me with 30 pounds of flesh that I don't feel deserving of.

This book really convinced me on the importance of weight training in order to maintain my metabolism. I have perused a number of weight training books and this one, I feel, is one of the best. While most books go through weight training exercises utilizing equipment available only at a gym, this book uses only dumbells and a mat---perfect for an inexpensive home workout!!! I love the fact that the book presents a set workout (complete with pictures) and a diet menu for every day of the 3 weeks that your body is transformed. It also includes a weekly grocery shopping list of foods that are included in the daily menus. I definitely feel more toned and trim after 2 weeks. While I have yet to weigh myself, many people have commented that I look as though I've lost some weight. Yeah me.

This instructor is awesome! She can really challenge you. There is a short (20 mins) and a long version (50 mins) you can chose, it depends on how much time you can dedicate on a particular day. This video has modification workouts that range from beginners to advanced. It works the whole body and the 5 pound kettle bell doesn't feel like a brick. I love it! Definitely recommend it!


Great to start but will make you want more

I bought this for my wife and she really enjoyed the workout for the first couple weeks. Bad thing was she required a heavier set soon after. Be sure to know what weight you want and it might be wise to get a multiple set.


Kettle Bell

I ordered the Kettle Bell for my wife....when it arrived the first thing I noticed was the handle. The shape of it did not allow for comfort, as a matter of fact every time I raised the bell it would scrape my knuckles. I thought it would be OK for my wife since my hands were bigger than hers....but that wasn't the case. We liked the idea but it was not usable for us. I repacked the bell and returned it to Amazon.

Weak, amateur and dangerous.

I do not recommend the Firm kettlebell video. It is in no way appropriate for beginners or anyone else. The technique shown is poor quality by any standard. Kettlebells are not toys to be played with, and making up kettlebell exercises gets amateurs in trouble every time. The off-center balance of the kettlebell makes correct technique even more important for safety than when using conventional implements. The Firm have mitigated this danger somewhat by using a kettlebell which is so light as to cancel out any effect unique to the kettlebell. In other words, if you are going to use the Firm kettlebell, you would do just as well (or badly) using a rock or a can of soup, or any other object of similar weight. With excellent kettlebell training information being available in this country for over 8 years, the bad quality of the firm video is inexcusable and frankly puzzling. It would seem to take extra effort to make a video so wrong. The kettlebell video I recommend Enter the Kettlebell! Strength Secret of the Soviet Supermenfor beginners is Enter the Kettlebell by Pavel Tsatsouline.


Kelsie Knows Her Stuff!

This is an excellent workout for beginners or advanced. I use a heavier bell for most of the moves, but when I first did this workout with the 5 lb. bell, it was tough! In bodybuilding, calf exercises increase the bulk and definition of the upper back and sides of the lower legs. The leg press calf raise is an excellent movement for this purpose.

 

Ankle joint extension is vital in speed walking, running and jumping activities because it provides the final push in propelling the body forward or upward as needed. This includes jumping in volleyball and basketball, diving, ski jumping, ballet, the high jump and long jump. In running and speed walking, ankle joint extension can create up to 50% of the force needed to propel you forward for maximum speed. That's why this action is important in sports such as track, soccer, tennis, lacrosse and other activities that involve sprinting.

 

More explosive sports may build calf muscle definition, but you won't see an increase in calf muscle mass. If you're looking for maximum mass development, bodybuilding is the answer.

 

Leg Press Calf Raise

 

Sit in an incline leg press machine with your glutes and lower back in firm contact with the seat pads.

 

Place the balls of your feet a comfortable width apart at the bottom edge of the resistance platform so that your heels are free to move.

 

Keep your toes pointed straight or slightly out. Your legs should be straight or very slightly bent but never locked.

 

Grip the machine's side handles to stabilize your upper body after you release the platform.

 

Inhale and hold your breath as you extend your feet at a slow to moderate rate of speed through an approximate 30 – 45 degree range of motion. Hold the fully extended position for 1 – 2 seconds to maximize the contraction.

 

Exhale as you return under control till you feel a slight stretch in your calves. Pause momentarily and then repeat.

 

To prevent your feet from slipping, wear shoes with good traction and be sure the surface of the resistance platform isn't slippery. The balls of your feet should stay in firm contact at all times.

 

Workout Tips

 

For safety and to ensure an adequate range of motion, do this exercise slowly or at a moderate rate of speed. If you do the movement quickly, you may fully straighten your legs and lose contact with the resistance platform.

 

The calf raise on a leg press machine is best suited for development of strength and mass through a shortened range of motion. If you fully extend your feet, you'll increase the possibility of your feet slipping off the platform. Limit your range of motion to ensure that your feet remain in contact at all times.

 

Avoid the exercise if the machine's platform or the soles of your shoes are smooth. Your chances of slipping increases greatly and the potential for severe injury can be quite high.

 

Be sure to keep your legs straight during execution, but don't lock or hyperextend your knees. This can be potentially dangerous, especially if your legs are slightly bowed when completely extended.

 

Hold your breath to stabilize your body and maximize your focus on ankle joint action. When you exhale on the return, control the movement at all times. Never completely relax as you could lose control of the platform.

 

Don't lower the resistance platform too quickly or bounce in the bottom position. This increases your chance of injury and the possibility of your feet slipping off the platform.

 

Primary Muscles Involved

 

The gastrocnemius, a two headed muscle that crosses both the ankle and knee joints and thus has an action at each end, shapes the upper portion of the back of your lower leg. Each head is clearly visible when the muscle is well defined. The soleus is slightly wider than the gastrocnemius and lies mostly underneath it. When well developed, this muscle can be seen to the sides of and slightly below the gastrocnemius.

 

Collectively, the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles are known as the calf muscles or the triceps surae muscle group. At its upper end, the gastrocnemius attaches to the thigh bone (femur); at its upper end, the soleus attaches to the tibia and fibula. They combine into the Achilles tendon at the lower end to attach to the heel bone (calcaneus).

 

Muscle / Joint Actions

 

In ankle joint extension, your feet move away from your shins. The gastrocnemius is most powerful when your legs are straight; the soleus is equally powerful regardless of knee position. The straighter your legs and the greater the weight, the more you'll work your gastrocnemius.

This became my favorite aerobics video of all time, and I wore out the VHS tape. I wish she would put it on DVD. The steps are a bit complicated to learn at first, but once you get them, it's a good workout, fast-moving and no too long, keeping me interested over many years. I like the arm workout with the band and the cooldown as well. I have tried the following other aerobics instructors: Jane Fonda, Kathy Smith, Cher, Donna Richardson, Gilad, Callenetics, Denise Austin, The Firm, Ginn Miller and Christi Taylor. My favorites are this one and Kathy Smith's Power Step.

Kari Anderson's Bench Works is a fun, challenging thorough work-out. The step segment includes innovative coreography to keep you interested and busy with Kari's great ability to cue well and build difficult moves together step by step. The resistance/strengthening segment is tough (but not impossible) and very effective. The ab section works all areas of the abdominal muscles without wasting time. Emphasis throughout is on good form and safe technique and includes good warm-up, cool down and stretching. It will keep you interested for years as you watch your fitness levels inprove. Challenging !

About 8 years ago I decided to try step aerobics to finally get in shape before I turned 50. I bought Kathy Smith's Power Step workout and was able to stick with it (3x a week for several years) and acheived my goal! What's great about this workout is how easy you can modify it for your fitness level. I'm very tall and I like Kathy's pace. There is time for me to finish each move. She also cues very well. I now have a couple other step routines that I do, but every now and again I do this workout and still enjoy it.


The Best Workout!!!

I have been doing The Power Step workout for 11 yrs now. (Twice a week). My DVD finally cracked when I took it out in a hurry. I lose weight and keep it off when I use this workout among my others that I do with weights as well. It is easy to do and your heart rate stays up that full time you use the workout. Much better for you than jogging or running. I highly recommend this for great buns and great legs. I get compliments on my legs and buns all the time!! Thanks to this workout. She uses all the muscles in your body and it is so fun to do! If you love to jump. Get the board that goes with it. Makes your workout even better. You forget you are exercising. It takes a few times to get the steps so you can follow but don't give up. It's all easy after that. You will enjoy yourself and the time flies!

Great workout even without the power!

I have tried all three Kathy Smith's step videos, I have to say I like this one the best. I wasn't sure how it would work for me, being that it's billed a "Power Stepping" workout, but Kathy includes a low impact modifier which I really appreciate. My heartrate was plenty high even without all the jumps, of course if I had the special bouncy step that is used in the video, I probably would have included the jumps. But, I tend to prefer low impact work, plus my achilles tendon is beat up a bit so I need to keep impact to a minimum anyway.

There are 3 combinations, plus warm up and cooldown. The entire workout is about 50 minutes, each stepping section is around 12 minutes. The moves are simple and straightforward, nothing too complex which I also prefer. It seems so many of today's step workouts are tricky and confusing, and I find myself staring at the TV puzzled rather than doing my workout. Many of my step workouts like this one, were from that early to mid 90's era, which was the best for step workouts in my opinion.

The only problem I have with this workout is that I would have prefer the lower body toning work be at the end of the workout or not in the workout at all. I do weight work on non step days and get plenty of squats and lunges there. But as another reviewer said, it's only for a few minutes so it's not a dealbreaker. I felt that it interrupted the flow of the workout, I would have preferred some other step moves in place of it.

Overall, I give this workout 4 stars. For those who don't like power moves, don't let that steer you away, there are actually 2 gals who do this workout without any power, and they are easy to follow. It's a great cardio workout either way.


Second favorite step workout of all time

I have been doing step aerobics videos for many, many years. I don't like over-complicated choreography with lots of twists and turns, and this is my second favorite step routine I've ever done. (#1 is Kari Anderson's Benchworks.) I'm glad it's out in DVD, because I wore out my VHS tape.


a good challenging workout

i was lucky enough to get step and workout[my brother bought it in a car boot sale for ~ $40]. i have to admit that i don't regret the purchase. it is a good solid workout and with each section it builds on the intensity so it suitable for all fitness levels.i think it is an advantage to workout with the power bench but an ordinary step will suffice. you will be sweating buckets at the end of the workout but you will be glad you did it.

Fast Results

I've been alternating the upper and lower body dvds as well as throwing in the abs workout and adding the Code Red a couple times a week for the past 6 weeks. I have also been walking 3-5 miles 3 times a week and closely monitoring my diet.
Results: I am 5'8" and started out at 159 lbs (I have a 5 month old and did absolutely nothing but eat during my pregnancy and got up to 180lbs. My normal weight is around 140lb. I've lost about 15lb and 5 inches in my hips and 3 inches in my waist and I have gained so much energy. In fact, I am about to purchase Chalean's Turbo Fire because I've really come to enjoy working out and I want to take it to the next level.
Now the cons...the music is crummy and Barry can be incredibly obnoxious. I really like Cindy, the trainer who is actually performing the excersises with you. I also wish it didn't require all the extras like the transformer and power handles. Storage is scarce in my house and the really take up a lot of room.

All in all, it is a great workout and a really great starting point b/c every excersise is modified for beginner, intermediate, and advanced.


Best Workout to Lose Inches

I recently bought this system and I am SHOCKED by the results. After the first six workouts, I lost an inch off my hips & waist. Keep in mind, I'm not new to exercise and I'm within 5 pounds of my goal weight. It's an intense workout, but it's worth the effort. I'm so glad I bought it!


Great Program but DANGEROUS

A couple weeks into this program, which I otherwise like a lot, the black resistance band broke suddenly while I was exercising, and nearly took out my left eye. Vision is still blurry and I hope it heals up fine but thought I'd warn others that this product has a serious flaw. I may resume with the green band but I'll be wearing racket ball eye protection. This product should not be sold, in my view, until this problem is fixed. Not to mention that the black band broke after only a couple of weeks!


Very good product, but pretty difficult

I don't know if I am pushing too hard, but this thing kicks my butt.

I have only been doing it for two weeks, just alternating the upper and lower workouts (taking off two days a week randomly). I see pretty drastic changes already, especially in the wife. We are not losing weight, but seriously shaping up.

If I were coaching a tennis, soccer, baseball team, I would buy 10 of these and start off the practice with this workout...it can be found for about 20 bucks on another site.


equipment keeps breaking

This seems to be a great workout DVD system, and I do like doing it but my equipment keeps breaking! I have never been able to make it through a full 30 days because something breaks everytime. Within the first couple days, I believe day 3, the "Transformer" exploded while I was using it. Because I was within my trial period the company did replace this at no cost to me. Also, the DVD's were not the best quality the mission specialists on both DVD's skip badly. So, I get my replacement transformer and try to start again, this time the power handle resistance band snapped. By this time my trial period was over and I had to replace this at my own cost, another $10. I really liked the workout so I paid it. But, here I am again, Day 8 and another resistance band has snapped. I will not be replacing it again, I will just go to the store and get a better quality one that may last more than a week! To conclude, I really do enjoy the workout but expect to replace your equipment to be able to continue these workouts.

This is a very solid piece of kids equipment.. No plastic parts here. The frame is made of real metal, and is extremely sturdy and well built.
Its like a real miniature workout bench! I do wish the bench was adjustable, but its no big deal.
My son is only 2 1/2 so its perfect for him, but I can see it being a little small for bigger kinds.

But well worth the price.. I highly recommend!

Great - but for smaller kids

This kids weight bench is great on many levels. I take my 6 year old son to the gym's "kids club" several times a week and he often wants to go to the workout area to "exercise like Daddy does." This bench is a fantastic way to stress the importance of exercise and health at a young age and, from what I can tell, there are no other products like it. However, I had to return it because it was too small. The box says it's good for kids up to 7 but my son is 6 and it's already way too small for him. He's a big bigger than normal but not an extremely large child. I would recommend this only for 5 year olds and younger. Too bad, they should make it a bit larger. I could see a larger version of something like this being useful until a child is maybe 10 years old (if it had the option of using real weights).

very intensive and descriptive! because it covers both buddhism and lucid dreaming the first half of the book is a condensation of buddhism and does a great job of laying it all out quickly and neatly! the stuff on dreaming is so cool and unique, it really delves into the spirituality of dreaming as well as introducing you to the folklore of bon/buddhist dream tradition. read it, love it! just know that waking up every two hours will not help you remember dreams. wake up 4.5, 6 and 7.5 hours after you go to sleep instead because this is when you are likely to be in REM sleep (dreaming) and therefore much more likely to remember your dreams;) the author says to wake up for three different periods at two hour intervals so you just switch it to what i just said and still do everything else he says the same. good stuff.


Disappointingly Theoretical

I've tried to use this book on and off for nearly seven years now. Its concepts are great and everything appears to be laid out. However, I've never gotten it to work at all. Perhaps it's something about me, or perhaps it has to do with the book. I can really only say that I'd probably have more luck with something more substantial and rougher going. The exercises were way too spaced out between various bits of theory for me, so that I found myself skipping around a lot through the milky masses of Buddhist concepts, trying to find actual traditions. If I were writing the book myself, I'd divide it into two parts, theory and practice. However, if that were done with this book, the theory section would take up 85%-95% of the book.

I think that teaching yourself lucid dreaming is probably only accessible to people who are highly visual in the first place, or who have cultivated their visual sense, like Hervey de Saint-Denis. Westerners who study Chinese for many years tend to be able to maintain awareness while experiencing hypnagogic states, in my experience. So, I can't wait until someone translates the Saint-Denis book or reissues the French ed. in full.

I gave the book 2 stars because it still contains some practical tradition. This includes sleeping posture, visualization, and breathing exercises. The number of pages used for writing about these things is equivalent to a short essay.


At last - the real deal on dreaming.

Finally a book on dreaming by someone who actually knows the true nature of the mind. And you don't have to be a buddhist, or wear the cultural clothing to take advantage of the practical advice contained within its pages. There is an excellent glossary for the more technical terms, though I have to say that the guide to Tibetan pronunciation left me more mystified than illuminated. (For example: Dzogchen - Tib., rdzogs chen). How the heck is rdzogs chen any clearer than Dzogchen?

If you read carefully, you will discover a wonderful road map for the awakening mind.

A tid-bit that has already worked wonders for me is the technique of blowing blue smoke up the central channel to dispel laxity. Here's the full quote:

"The second obstacle is laxity. It manifests as an internal laziness, a lack of internal strength and clarity. When you are lax in practice, you drift around, clouded and perhaps comfortable, even while attending to the object of attention. The antidote is to visualize blue smoke slowly drifting up the central channel from the junction of the three channels (a few inches below the navel and in the center of the body) to the throat. Do not get hung up thinking of physics - where the smoke goes and if it collects and that kind of thing. Just visualize the smoke slowly moving up the central channel, as if it were already a dream."

This book is excellent, and rich with great wisdom and knowledge. It just doesn't teach you about mastering dreams, but also mastering sleep. It is both dream and sleep yoga in one book.

This book also help clear up some things on the belief of deity yoga, but taught me a little more on karma that other Buddhism books left out. Not I can see the misunderstanding of how many see karma as something one carries, not as a force that is like a boomerang. They mixed karmic trace for karma.That is why many need stop thinking, and meditate for understanding. As for the dream yoga, the teachings are most simple to folow and remeber, it is one's practice that needs effort. For those who do not understand true spiritul being and cosmic reality, such teachings may seem weird. For those who seek truth and true spiritual being, these teachings may make much sense, clear as crystal reflecting sun rays. This book teaches how to master dreams by starting seeing this reality as a dream, since this world is an illusion. While in sleep yoga, it teaches on how to master sleep, and prepair one for enlighten when one times come to depart from this realm in death. Sleep yoga is given as opptional teaching, on can just practice dream yoga. But it is best to learn both, so one can prepair to know what to do when death comes, if one does not want to be earthbound or reborn else where, if not as human in this realm.

What you need to know before buying this book

What I have to say here is NOT INTENDED AS A REVIEW: I just want to give you some background knowledge that'll help you sort out the controversy surrounding this training method for yourself.

Exercising your muscles by holding them against resistance in a static position is known as isometric training. If you look back at the history of physical training over the decades, and even over the centuries, you'll see that isometric training regularly comes into and out of vogue. Many yoga asanas, for example, can be seen as isometric endurance holds. Isometric training can also be more intense - pushing or pulling at 60 to 100% of maximum exertion against an unmoving object. "Max Contraction Training" is one form of this. But so too can be simply tensing (or "flexing") your muscles as hard as you can in a static position.

I'd like to put in a couple of links here, but unfortunately I can't - Amazon has a way of censoring out any external links. However, if you do a bit of Googling on your own, you'll quickly discover that it is very well established that:

1. Isometric training does work. It is incredibly effective at increasing strength at the specific angle you exercise at.

2. Isometric training is not especially effective at building full range of motion strength - although in each individual there will be a very small percentage of muscles that will have their full range of motion strength increased by isometric training alone. Which specific muscles have this characteristic varies from person to person. I know this sounds very strange, but that's what the empirical research says. Go figure.

3. Isometric training by exercising your muscles in the most extended position (essentially the exact opposite of the position recommended in Max Contraction Training) also improves flexibility. Interestingly enough, according to the mainstream science, this is also the best position to use if you want to maximize the effect of isometric training on your full range of motion strength.

Because isometric training is most effective at improving strength at (or close to) the exact position you train, in some forms of isometric training the same muscle group will normally be exercised in a range of different positions. For example, in both hatha yoga and bullworker training. In this way more broadly useful strength is cultivated.

On the other hand, precisely because isometric training is far and away the most effective way of building strength in any one position, this form of training is exceptionally useful for people who do want to maximize their strength in a specific position or series of positions: for example, wrestlers who want to maximize their strength for purposes of specific holds.

Another major advantage of isometric training is its sheer brevity: each hold is normally maintained for only 7 to 10 seconds. 7 second holds are traditional. My own understanding of the current empirical research is that while 7 seconds is optimal for cultivating strength, 10 second holds are best if your goal is to maximize muscle mass. But clearly, either way an entire workout can be completed extrordinarily quickly.

If isometric training sounds like it might be right for you, in addition to the methods suggested in this book you might also like to consider the Bow Classic - Full-size Bullworker and FREE DVD or the Steel-Bow Bullworker - Flex the Ultimate Total Home Gym includes 2 FREE DVDs. A waste of money

This is a ridiculous book that claims to deliver superior results in as little as 10 seconds of exercise per week. While this may sound appealingly contrarian to the inexperienced and physiologically naive, Little's (and Pete Sisco's) "programs" are actually mere recycled techniques---partial reps and isometric holds---that have been a small part of weightlifting for decades (remember Charles Atlas?). Were they to constitute true comprehensive training routines for maximum strength, coaches and athletes in many sports around the world would be using them exclusively. The fact that none do says all that we need to know.

Very Informative -Very Unique Methodology

This book by John Little is well researched. It provides a lot of documentation on the principles of High Intensity Training as well as program design. The issue I find with this product is not the book itself but some of the training methodology. It is well documented that full range exercise is need. Max Contraction focuses on only the point of maximum contraction where the maximum number of muscle fibers are activated. This is solid way to increase strength but must be done in conjunction with full range exercise. Doing max contraction by itself provides no real benefit but when combined with full range exercise has the ability to greatly increase muscular strength.

I highly recommend this book to those who want to learn everything they can about training. It is very informative and is a very unique approach to weight training.

For the foundations of High Intensity Exercise I recommend getting purchasing the Arthur Jones Nautilus bulletins.


The best workout plan out there for achieving maximum intensity!

This is the best workout plan that I know of for enabling you to generate maximum intensity, and thus for enabling you to build maximum muscle in minimum time. This workout plan is much more effecive and more complete than Little's earlier book "Static Contraction Training" that he co-authored with Peter Sisco.
For starters, Little gives the most useful, complete and accurate definition for intensity (as it relates to strength training ) that I've found in any book. This is extemely important, because without the right definition for intensity (i.e one that works in both theory and practice), you won't know which strategies work most effectively to maximize the intensity of any exercise that you do. And if don't generate maximum intensity due to that limitation, you simply won't build maximum muscle in minimum time. So the right definition for intensity (i.e. one that works in both theory and can be applied practically) has always been the missing piece of the puzzle when it comes to devising the ideal workout plan, which explains why the ideal workout plan has eluded even the experts in this field for so many years.
With that said, Little doesn't always consistently apply his definition for intensity to every exercise in the book, which surprised me. And that is one of the major problems with this workout plan. That of course is a problem that the reader can take care of on his or her own, but it might confuse some people.
Also, as good as this plan is, it's still incomplete, because it leaves out a number of important motions (and therefore exercises) that should be done if you really want to fully develop every skeletal muscle that you possibly can throughout your entire body. Fortunately, I developed my own workout plan that remedies these problems, and it basically begins where Max Contraction Training leaves off. My book hasn't been published yet, so the closest you're going to get to it is this book by John Little.
Now there are die-hard aficionados of conventional training methods who will deride Little's workout plan and book, because they still wrongly believe that you need to do repeated body motions to build muscle. But repeated body motions are not a requisite for muscle growth stimulation; muscular contraction is! And the one and only underlying factor behind the effectiveness of all strength-training plans that lead to greater muscle growth is muscular contraction, especially muscular contraction against a net external force. Isometrics are evidence of that.
Finally, I disagree with Little's approach to nutrition. Obviously he adheres to the old school of nutrition, which teaches that you can get everything you need from a diet based upon the 4 basic food groups. But that approach is so outdated, and the study of human nutrition has come a long way since then. For example, simply eating fruits and vegetables every day does not guarantee that you'll get all the Vitamin C you need for optimum health, because not all fruits and vegetables are high in Vitamin C. And if you cook them (such as a white potato), that destroys the Vitamin C. But Little's nutritional advice is not the reason to buy this book; the workout plan is!

Originally, I borrowed this book at the library to start a weight work out program. I already had a balance ball and weights and I was looking to put some "variety" in my workout regime. I liked the book so much I ordered it used on Amazon.Com My husband and I complete this workout at home on alternate days when we don't go to the YMCA to walk or swim. I would highly recommend this book. It provids beginning, intermediate and advanced variations of using weights along with the balance ball, and so we can use it for a long time as our capability increases.


Best book of its type

I bought this book from Amazon last August, have been progressing through its workouts 3 times a week since then, kept waiting to be disappointed by some part of it, but am keen to report that this is the best book of its type that I have yet found. Here are several reasons why this book is excellent. The explanations and photos that show how to do each movement are superbly clear. I haven't found one yet that I had to read twice in order to understand. Each movement also comes with basic, intermediate and advanced variations. The author also used very good sense when he created sequences of movements called "Firm Foundation," "Slim and Trim" and "Muscle Bound." One other reason I enjoy this book so much is that the different workouts provide me enough variety that I can easily shift programs once a routine starts to become too familiar. I believe that whether you are at a beginning or intermediate fitness level you will benefit greatly from this book.


Weights on the ball

Supposedly, lifting weights on a balance ball (aka Swiss ball, physio ball) can improve results as you employ more small muscles to keep your balance as you work out. This book requires weights (dumbells), a physio ball, and some other equipment like ankle weights and a bench (to do dips.)

There are quite a few workouts, listed by goal (strength, fat loss, flexibility) but the book was advertised to come with a plastic comb binding to stay open and the one I received was bound as a regular book. So it won't stay open as I work out. I was rather disappointed by this.

Great bench for any home gym.

The bench has leather covers, is made of small gauge steel and is therefore light and easy to move around.
It is an unbelievable steal for the price they ask for it (which was $59.00 when I bought it + free shipping, gotta love amazon). I was very skeptical but am EXTREMELY pleased with my purchase. I weigh 170lbs, and use no more than 100lbs of combined weight while using this bench as the weight limit is said to be 300lbs. This may be the only drawback for user looking to put on a ton of muscle and get big as it will not support very heavy weight lifting. The dumbbell hooks are stupid but you do not need to install them at all if you don't feel like it. Overall, great product that I would recommend to anyone.
*Instructions says it requires two people and a fair amount of time to put together, but I did it by myself in about 45 minutes start to finish.

Bench is pretty good but customer service isn't

I received the bench, put it together and it was extremely wobbly. One end lifted off the floor by 2-3 inches. I called and also emailed customer service several times and received no response. I finally found the main number for the company on their website, called and was finally able to talk to someone. They said they would check into replacing the base. A few days later I received an email saying that they would re-send the base. That took another week even though I requested that they send it overnight. When I received new base, one of the pieces was faulty and un-usable. But, luckily, I only needed one of the pieces to make the bench stable. For the price, I think this is a good buy, but be prepared for slow customer service if you need them.


Gives a great workout!

The workout bench was easy to assemble although the manual makes it look very difficult. As for workouts, the bench works great though i'm 6'2" so I do have to move back and forth on the bench a little bit in order for it to be comfortable depending on what type of workout you are doing.

In summary the bench is great for all but the sit up position but that is only due to height restrictions. I wouldn't recommend the bench for anyone over 6 feet tall.


Decent bench for dumbbells

As noted in other reviews this isn't a large bench. I'm 5'11 and that seems about max height. Yes there is some assembly required but not too bad considering the cost. All pieces fit together and I'm happy with how it turned out. If you don't want to spend a lot of cash, you're not huge and looking for a bench to do dumbbell workout this could be the bench for you.

The inversion table came in two days and was well packed. It was very easy to put together with the paper manual, but I realized after that the video that came with it has instructions and that would have made it even easier. The video is very thorough and has a lot of good exercises on it for those with back problems. I looked at a lot of different brands and models before I picked this one, and I think this one is worth the money as it is very comfortable and made well. My husband has problems with the disks in the thoracic region of his spine, and his doctors cannot do anything for him. I got this for him to see if it would help. He loves it and tries to use every night, and it seems to be helping a lot. When we went away for a couple of weeks, he noticed a big difference when he wasn't using it. I also enjoy using it every so often, and it doesn't hurt my feet as long as I keep my ankles flexed. I'm a personal trainer and find it not only a nice way to stretch and lengthen the body, but also great for doing core exercises.

Wow! What a Great Feeling to be Inverted!

I've had my Teeter Hang Ups EP-550 now for about a month and I really enjoy spending time on it. I am close to doing full inversion and I think in a few more weeks I will be doing full inversions.

I have no back issues but wanted to be able to keep my back in good condition for the rest of my life. The only time that my back is sore is the next day after I finish my workout at the gym due to the lactic acid build-up in the muscles. But now I go on the Teeter Hang Ups after my workout and the following morning I don't feel any soreness anymore. It's totally amazing to feel refreshed from a workout and not feel sore the next day. You can't beat that.

I have read many reviews here that it has helped those that are having back trouble and it is great to read the stories of how it has helped them gain relief. I would recommend this product to anyone that wants to keep their back in great shape or to help relieve pain if you have back trouble since it seems to be helping others.

Besides that, the Teeter Hang Ups feels safe to invert on and it is really well constructed and comfortable. Your ankles will feel uncomfortable in the beginning when you invert but you will adjust after you have spent time on it. You have to wear some thick socks and comfortable tennis shoes. That does the trick for me.


EP-550 A High Quality Inversion Table

I researched several other inversion table manufacturers before deciding to purchase the Teeter EP-550. After three weeks of daily use I can report that I am very satisfied with the product. When hanging upside down you want an inversion table that is manufactured to high standards.
Assembly of the product was easy if you follow the directions. I am 6'1" and my wife is 5'4" so the ability to easily adjust the table is a real plus and encourages daily use. The design of the locking system for your feet and ankles makes you feel very secure when hanging upside down. I find it is best to wear heavy athletic shoes and socks for the best comfort when inverting. There is some pressure on the top of the foot and ankles especially when fully inverted but you quickly get used to it.
One of the best design features is the adjustable pivot point which let's the user control the speed of tilting backwards. This is great when you first start using the product and makes the user more confident to use it alone. There is a also an adjustable strap that allows you to pre-determine the maximum angle of inversion.
The manual urges beginners to limit their inversion to 60-degrees the first three weeks. This allows your body to acclimate to the felling of being inverted and you get all the benefits of spinal decompression. I sit a lot in front of a computer and I find this relieves a lot of tension in my back when I invert in the evening. I am starting to do some of the exercises like curving and rotating the back and the plastic table flexes for more comfort which is another useful feature. I can feel my back and abdominal muscles being stretched during inversion and abdominal crunches while inverted are really challenging. The Teeter unit is very stable and this is reassuring when doing exercises while inverted.
I know there are cheaper tables available but I am very pleased with the Teeter EP-550 after three weeks of use.

Best bench for the price/practicality.

I have used this bench for about a month now and couldn't be happier. I'm 5'11'' and don't have a problem using it, although my friend who is 6'2'' feels a little uncomforable when lying flat. I live in a manhattan studio apartment and store the bench between my bed and dressor which is saving me $87 dollars a month on a gym membership. It just makes sense.

Incline Dumbbell Flye

Target: Upper chest

Start: Adjust a bench so the incline is set to 30-45 degrees. Lie face up on the bench with your feet flat on the floor. Hold a dumbbell in each hand with a neutral grip and extend your arms above your chest. Bend your elbows slightly.

Execution: Slowly lower the weights out to your sides in a wide arc. Keep your elbows locked in the slightly bent position throughout the range of motion. Stop when your elbows reach shoulder level, then reverse.

Tip: Make sure you're positioned properly on the bench, and start with a light weight to warm up the chest because you can hurt yourself if you try to go too heavy. Only use a weight you can handle comfortably.

Incline Dumbbell Press

Target: Upper chest

Start: Lie face up on an incline bench set at about a 45 degree angle. Your torso should be fully supported from your head to your hips, with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Extend your arms with your palms facing forwards.

Execution: Bend your elbows and slowly lower the weights towards the outsides of your chest. (In the barbell version, the bar should come to your upper chest.) When the dumbbells reach about chest level, forcefully extend your arms, pressing the weights back up to the starting position.

Tip: A lot of people get chest injuries, so you really need to warm up properly before moving into your working sets. Listen to your body and don't lift too heavy if you don't feel ready. Your main goal is to build muscle.

Dip

Target: Lower chest

Start: Stand between a set of parallel bars and press yourself into position: arms extended, chest up, head straight and ankles crossed.

Execution: Leaning forwards slightly to take the pressure off your triceps, lower your body by bending your elbows until your upper arms are slightly above parallel to the floor, then press yourself back up to the start position.

Tip: Make sure to lean forwards, really feeling it in the chest. If you stay upright, your triceps absorb the stress.

Wide Grip Bench Press

Target: Outer chest

Start: Lie face up on a flat bench with your feet flat on the floor. Grasp a barbell with a wide grip (outside shoulder-width) overhand grip. Press the bar up slightly to unrack it, then steady it above your chest with your arms extended.

Execution: Lower the bar to your lower chest, but don't bounce it off. Instead, when the bar approaches an inch or so away from your chest, pause and press it back up to the start position. Squeeze your chest at the top of the movement.

Tip: You must really focus on the chest and do the movement slowly. If you just go through the motions, you won't squeeze all the benefits you can out of this exercise.

This is my favorite DVD of the Firm's third Body Sculpting system. I say this because I feel I get an outstanding overall workout WITHOUT the frustration of having to learn a more complicated routine. A previous reviewer had stated: "Some of the footwork in The Firm videos using the step are complicated to the point of ridiculousness". This is certainly true of Firm: Total Muscle Shaping but cannot be said of The Firm - Complete Body Sculpting. For one thing, Christa leaves out those confusing "turn steps" on the step that Stephanie includes in her program. Complete Body Sculpting offers a no nonsense, straightforward program as advertised "to reshape your entire body, specifically targeting the areas most women want to change--the backs of your thighs, hips and fanny!" Not only that but highly effective exercises for the abdominals, gluteals, biceps and triceps are also included.

A previous reviewer described the instructor on this video (Christa Riley) as being "pleasant but bland". I would disagree with that. In fact I find Riley refreshingly on point. Although I do like Walk Away the Pounds instructor Leslie Sansone, some have described her as being too chatty and scattered. This cannot be said about Riley who continues to instruct both beginner and advanced exerciser without distraction. So for those individuals who prefer Riley's type of instruction she cannot be beat.

There is also no problem using a regular step or the Transfirmer from another Firm series instead of the Firm Box. For some the Firm Box proved to be a disappointment when it had a tendency to not be as stable as a regular step even to the point of collapsing mid routine. Additionally you will need to have a set of free weights anything from 3 to 8 lbs or more.

This is a great interval training tape combining both strength training and aerobics. I would highly recommend it for both beginning and advanced exerciser alike.


Pretty good workout

This is a pretty good workout. Like many of the Firm workouts, I don't particularly care for some of her cardio or step exercises, but other than that it's a pretty good workout.

A Great One

This is a very challening aerobic weight training workout; it's also lots of fun. Lively, motivating music, and good cueing from the instructor. I did however find the ab section almost impossible to do on the transfirmer, so I had to move to the floor for that one- I still got a good ab workout. Unfortunately, the entire BSS3 series (the Firm Box workouts) overall do a poor job of showing the beginner modifications. Again, on the brighter side, the other systems (the transfirmer and the transformation workouts) do an EXCELLENT job keeping the "beginner" on the screen. Also, in my opinion, the instructor Christa Riley does look a bit too thin...


Great Workout, even for The Firm novices

I had never tried any Firm products, so this is the first product I tried. I checked it out from the library,and it quickly became my favorite. This video has a ton of variety (each segment lasts about 5 minutes) and at the end of the 40/45 minute workout my entire body was worked. I am not a natural on the step and found the cueing to be very good. They have a separate person that shows the beginner modifications, and I also found that after a month I just used my step at full height and the heavier weights. The only two negatives (and these are very minor) is that each time you start the workout, you have to listen to an intro about wanting better and more shapely thighs... I wish they would just let us press a button and go straight to the start of the workout. The second minor complaint is that they use the heavy weights for areas that you may want to use a lighter weight. I use the 5 lbs and 8 lbs and quickly lower my weights depending on the exercises. I think that with the exception of shoulders, they recommend the heavier weights.

These leggings are awesome. They are so comfortable and provide just the right amount of coverage. You can wear it just by itself or under a tunic or a dress. The material is soft and stretchy.


goes great with sweater dress!

I have enjoyed these leggings so much since I received them as a gift for Christmas (along with KD's sultry sweater dress). I like where they hit me on my torso - not *so* low, like the annoying trendy jeans that seem to be made for 13 year old girls with no hips, and not so high that they give you a wierd line at your belly-button when you wear them under a dress. They're kind of like the 3rd bowl of porridge in "Goldilocks and the Three Bears": 'just right'. Because they're made with KD's signature stretch fabric, they cling to you gently, and move with you beautifully, without sagging at the knees or in the behind. I've gotten countless tights from Target, the Gap, etc. that end up sagging. Who needs sags and wrinkles to add to the junk in their trunk under a dress?! I sometimes wear these to do yoga, in the cooler months, and sometimes lounge in them around the house (my baby loves sitting in my lap when I'm wearing these!), but I also really enjoy wearing them under a dress with boots - you can totally dress them up or down, and they're great either way.

I am 67 years old and have lived in a beach city my entire life. This exercise tool truly simulates surfing, without the water and associated fear of sharks or drowning. The exercises portrayed on the accompaning DVD's offer a full body work-out and excellent instruction. I have also found that the Wave is a wonderful tool for the improvement of balance. It forces one to stand straight with knees slightly bent. The best part is that is really fun to use!!

All about butt and thighs... very little upper body exercise

I was really disappointed in this workout system. The main focus is butt and thighs and hardly any of the video is dedicated to core or upper body. I don't think this is a very well rounded workout. Also, the wave board is frustrating. I was constantly have to put the board back on the mat as it does not stay in place. I will stick to Core Secrets.

FUN! FUN! FUN!

I really LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this workout!!! I had so much fun doing it!! I was looking for a routine to replace the kickboxing class at my gym [can no longer afford the fee]..and THIS IS IT!!! Jessica is upbeat, engaging, motivating but she is not annoying, snarling or overly cutsie. Her body is very motivating to me as it is athletic with curves. I feel like she is really speaking directly to me. For the record, I am trying to get back into shape after letting myself go for several years. I am formerly a high school and college cheerleader/dance team. I also played volleyball and soccer. I consider myself pretty coordinated and after watching the DVD through the first time and then doing it a couple of times I found it easy to catch on to the steps. But, I can totally see how it may be frustrating for others to learn the steps. KEEP TRYING! You will get it or just do your own modifications -- I think it will be worth it!! I can already tell that I am going to lean out with this routine. LOVE IT and IT IS FUN!!


Very Disappointing

I would not waste my money on this if I were you. It's not accurate when it comes to reading your movements especially on the ball return and dodge ball segments. Sometimes your WII person is swinging their arms and you haven't even moved. The graphics are terrible. The people look deformed. Once again it takes longer to get set up to do the exercise than it takes to actually exercise. Slow movements and way too much down time. It is not really a 10 minute work out since you can only do one five minute and then a break while it reloads the next five minute segment. I'm still waiting for a good exercise program that is fun to do, gives you a good consistent work out and doesn't have a bunch of extra stuff that slows it down.


Really Digging the 10 Minute Workouts

I started off with turbojam, but didn't like the fact that most of the workouts are almost an hour long, and I don't always have that much time (that and lets face it I got a little bored with the workouts). Bought this 10 minute solution workout set and I am really liking it. I usually will do 3 of the workouts in a row and you have the choice to mix and match them differently each time. I think this is what is keeping me interested, and the 10 minutes go by so fast you are ready to do another workout without thinking about it. At first I didn't feel the workouts were very difficult, but I soon learned differently the next day when my muscles were sore. The weighted gloves also add to the workout. If she puts out a second volume of these workouts I would probably buy them.

I did it for the first time today and man I feel great! The biggest advantage of kickboxing besides the calorie burn is the energy it gives you. I feel amazing. Chalene is awesome and so are the others in this video series. I admit I have not been as faithful with the workouts as I should be but when I do get my lazy butt off the couch and pop in a video, I always have a great time. I especially enjoy the Cardio Party. It's the fastest and funnest 45 minutes of my day and I feel so good afterwards.

If you are considering this product I highly recommend it and know that it will help me reach my fitness goals without the hassle of a gym membership.

Turbo Jam is AMAZING, I LOVE every single video included-- however you can buy the DVD combo here on amazon for $17 new, and the gloves for under $20 and save on the silly measuring tape (can get in the dollar store) and the book (how this cost $30, I just do not know!). Buy this DVD if you want a fun, heart pounding, workout-- but I wish someone had helped me realize how much I'd save if I went and bought the items separately.


Damaged

I just got my Turbo Jam and when I opened the box, the plastic bag that everything comes in was already opened. I thought it was weird but was willing to look past it since the dvd was still in the plastic wrap. I just did it this morning and midway through the workout the dvd skipped because it was damaged. So beware, this came directly from Beach Body and not a resell so not sure why the quality was bad.


Love Turbo Jam

I received my Turbo Jam and started using it about 2 weeks before Christmas. I like that they show you each of the 11 core moves and then put them into practice with a short workout. It took about 4 or 5 times through the "Learn and Burn" before I had the routine down. It really gives an all over work out. You can progress at your own pace. I have now been doing 3 workouts a week seriously for 6 weeks. I'm definitely starting to see a difference and so is my husband. He is also doing the workout and it's something he's been sticking to also. I'm not a go to the gym type of person so this is perfect for me. It's fun and it works! Worth the $$ for me.

I am an avid martial artist and did not see any of the claimed muscle or physical fitness gains. I did however notice improved sleep which can be attributed to the ingredient Melatonin. I recommend purchasing the same amount of Melatonin in supplement form at any local grocery store. I just bought 3 months worth for $6.00.

Unfortunately Stemulite did not perform as described for me, but that does not mean it will not work for others!

I bought this bike for my son for his 5th birthday, and I am returning it. The assembly directions are complicated and impossible to decipher. I have assembled countless toys properly and effectively so it is not me - it is definitely the product and the sub-English instructions. Pieces broke during assembly. It is not worth your money. Trust me, you will be disappointed.

I bought this armband and the very first time I used it, the Velcro piece fell off. I was able to secure it again using other adhesives.

I guess that is what you get for $4.


You Get What You Pay For.

I got this item back in October. Its comfortable. The strap is long
enough to fit larger than normal arms, and navigating through the
ipod was easy. This armband is great for those who workout occasionally.
Or for people who's arms are normal size / thinner.

Because I run and lift weights regularly, the armband wore out much
faster than it should have. It lasted 6 months before it tore apart completely.

So, I would recommend The TuneBelt armband w/extender which will
run you $15 and is much more durable.

I love this lightweight Ipod Nano armband. It is the cheapest of the available products I saw, and at the same time the most useful. The Velcro concerned me in the description, but it seems to me like it was the best idea. It holds well and because it is Velcro, it also is very easy to take off or take out the Ipod. Great product, worth more than it sells for.

Tune Belt's Sport Armband Plus for iPod nano 5G was designed to hold a fifth OR fourth generation iPod nano WITH or WITHOUT the Nike+ Receiver attached.

This was a gift for my boyfriend, who is an athlete, and it turned out that the band was too short for his arm. He liked it otherwise, but ended up not using it because it couldn't be safely closed around his arm. Too bad.

I looked at many other armbands and this was the best one. I have a Nike+ receiver and all the other armbands were not long enough to work. This is also great because it has a place to put my extra wire from my headphones. The plastic is a little tight to get the ipod in and out. I don't mind because the other one's I tried had so much plastic my ipod wouldn't even work. This is a great product. Shipping was so fast. 5 stars for me.

i bought the tunebelt for my sister to use during runs w/ her new ipod and nike+. fits perfectly and doesnt loosen during runs. she loved the ability to tie her extra cord to the belt. It seems to be made of good material and she hasnt had any problems yet. :)

Two major issues:
- The thick plastic makes it impossible to use the ipod controls.
- It is extremely difficult to get the ipod out of the armband because the plastic sticks to the front of the ipod.

The bands are nice. Lots of resistance, and are easily doubled up for the workout. The thigh strap is incredibly small and barely fits my wife let alone me. We don't have large thighs either, the thing is just too small.

After measuring it, it is 24" long. If your thigh is any bigger than 23", you will be putting on a tourniquet.

Good but disappointed

I got this product because I wanted new bands, in fact, the day it arrived the original band snapped. The bands worked great but the plastic on the leg strap broke the first time I put it on,so I have had to continue with the original leg strap. I rated this as ok because the bands did as I expected but was disappointed in the workmanship on the leg strap.


length of leg band

I expected the leg band to be very short. When I compared it to the ea leg band, it was only 1 1/2" shorter. I CERTAINLY don't have 19" thighs but it fit me. I also love the extra padding on the handles for the resistance bands. They suggest combining the bands for more resistance, I'm not there yet... It is great to work out with someone else. Then you aren't the only one getting yelled at :) when doing the ea active.




workout kit

The first time you come across fitness equipment in a gym or a shop can be scary sometimes as those machines can look like a torture kit from some bad horror movie. Even if they can look scary and complicated they have been carefully thought and made to make sure a particular muscle or set of muscles will work in the best conditions possible.

It probably exist as many types of fitness equipment as muscles in a human body, and gyms all around the United Kingdom and the rest of the world will usually make sure there is plenty for you in your Liverpool gym, Manchester gym or anywhere else for you.

Even a piece of equipment as simple as dumbells can be used on many different exercise and help work out on various muscles across your body. It is important though when working out with dumbbells, weight or any other piece of equipment to always do the exercises carefully so you do not injure yourself or people around you. A simple example is when you have just started going to the gym or using a particular piece of equipment. As your muscles are not used to exercising you need to start slowly and not put on too much weight on the machine or you may experience muscle pain quite quickly.

It is not only important to be careful when you are first using fitness equipment. It is important to ba careful at all times. That is the reason why it is advised to always warm up, especially before doing any aerobic activity, mainly because this kind of activity is a repetitive one that will increase your heart rate. Another simple element to always think of is to drink water as often as possible during yout workout. On top of reducing your chances of becoming dehydrated, drinking water regularly will avoid a reduction of performance.

It has been proved that the loss of two percents bodyweight due to dehydration will cause a reduction of performance by around ten percents to twenty percents which is huge in comparison to the loss of water of only two percents of body weight. The issue of dehydration is something very serious as it can be fatal at some point.

Most fitness clubs will have water fountains in their premises and will display warning signs everywhere to make sure people are careful when exercising and drink enough water. The staff is usually highly trained in case somebody passes out in the gym and needs medical attention.

The author has been going to a Liverpool gym and Manchester gym for some times and knows a lot.

I LOVE this five-day abs tape by THE FIRM. I've been using it for more than 10 years. I like that there are five different workouts. None of them are more than 9 minutes. So when I'm rushing around getting ready for work in the morning, I know I have time to do my ab workout if I still have 6 to 9 minutes left before I need to leave the house. It helps me rush to be ready on time because I don't want to miss the workout. The music to the videos is a bit cheesy/dated-sounding, but the ab exercises are well choreographed to the music. So the music, cheesy as it may be, makes a lot of sense and helps you get through the workout! Also, I can do abs on my own, of course, but when I do, I end up resting and daydreaming a lot in between and before I know it I may end up taking 20 minutes to do the workout. With the FIVE-DAY ABS tape, I just press play, lie down on the floor, GET THE AB WORK DONE, and then I'm up and outta there .... on my way to work. No time to dawdle! It is perfect for me.

Also, I like that there is a different workout each day, so I don't get bored doing the same thing every day. It's just enough variety, and very effective, which is why I keep at it.

Several years ago, I got a tiny little voice recorder and used it to save the audio for all five sessions. It makes it easy for me to keep doing my abs while I'm traveling. Recently my VHS tape that I use at home has disappeared. I don't know how! It must have fallen down behind somewhere, but I can't find it! I went searching for it online ... thankfully, I found the DVD version of the tape at amazon so I'm going to buy that. I LOVE THIS WORKOUT. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm still using this 60 years from now. At least I hope I'll live that long. :)

Just simple, effective, difficult but do-able ab exercises, some fitness tapes try to hard to be inventive... gimmicky awkward workouts are impossible to stick to in the long run. But this is just clean, easy to follow ab routines that are short enough to fit into you daily routine. I've been doing 1-2 workouts from this tape every morning for years and I'm still not bored with it!

If you want an ab workout you can actually stick to and stay motivated, this is it!!

This tape annoys me

Okay, so the exercises ARE good. The abs exercises on most of the FIRM tapes that have them ARE good. But I still think it was a mistake ordering this tape for two reasons:
1. It's just a collection of routines from other, earlier FIRM tapes, so to me it pretty much seems like a rip-off. Also, get ready for some OLD ones there - from the time when instructors looked like Kate Moss and even guys were wearing pink and orange aerobics clothes. If you ever felt like you didn't quite enjoy looking at such things anymore - well, then you'll find this tape a visual disaster.
2. Who is this Tracy guy, for heaven's sake?! All he does is introducing the sets of exercises - half naked and looking as unnatural as a diamond ring on a homeless guy's pinky. He's ridiculous, but he's actually too annoying for me to be able to simply laugh at him.
Altogether, this tape was a disappointment and the two stars are strictly for the exercises.

I also have the Pilates Beginning Mat Workout, Intermediate Mat Workout. This video could be called Advanced Mat Workout, and I would recommend it to anyone who has done the others.

I like all of them because she really explains what you are doing and takes you thru the process. There is no loud music or scantly clad people jumping around. She gives clear directions even when you are upside down and can't see the screen. This is a really good workout with clear instructions.

My title says it all. Ana knows her moves and teaches well, but personally, I find her style not particularly inspiring. But that's just me. Still, it's a good DVD to get results and you can always play your own music in the background if you want and still see proper form and good pilates positions. Oh! and she's not annoying, that's a very big deal with exercise DVD's! :)


just an okay workout

Just as fun as his earlier DVDs

I work out to the original 2-disk set, and enjoy it very much (see my review). This single Hips, Buns and Thighs disk includes all the best of his crew (except Gloria, who is one of his best too, is not in the exercise portion, but she is in the Learn to Dance segment). The people not on this disk should stay off any future ones - I won't miss them. The moves are more dance-like than on earlier disks, adding to the fun. The one workout is challenging, but not unreasonably so. The floor work is pretty hard if you aren't in top shape yet, as they don't let you rest much between exercises. You'll definitely feel the burn, but you'll feel stronger as a result. They seem to move faster through the bonus "Learn to Dance" routine than on the earlier disk set, and with a little less instruction, so I haven't caught onto it yet. Again, my only real criticism is that there's only one exercise routine per disk and too many advertisements. I'm sure the company makes more money that way, but it leaves me feeling a little cheated. Still, I'll keep getting Shaun T's DVDs, as they keep me motivated because I enjoy them.


Workout shorter than I expected, but still a good workout

I had seen someone on a morning show who had lost lots of weight using the Beach Body DVDs, and he looked great, so I thought I'd try at least one for myself. I liked the workout, and although it was short, I could feel like it really worked my hips, buns, thighs and abs, too. I especially liked that there is a little timer that counts down the minutes as you workout--I always like to know how much longer I have to go in a workout.
The only drawback that I can see is that the workout is really short, so as you get more stamina, the workout might lose its effectiveness. I guess then you just buy another DVD in the series.


Love This DVD!!!

I had started watching Dance Your A*** Off on a co-worker's recommendation which made me want to start dancing. I also wanted to increase my exercise/weight loss program I started a few months ago with wii Sports Extreme and went from medium to high intensity in the 30 day challenge part. (which I highly recommend by the way) At age 57 I needed something not too fast and confusing also the dvd's on dance I already had were not exciting enough to keep using and the dvd's sold are mostly Salsa or Mamba so I started checking Amazon's dance dvd's and their reviews. When I got this dvd it turned out to be everything I was looking for - great instruction, great music, and a very likable instructor and crew. I am definitely getting all the dvd's in this series! At 57 and being concerned about my weight affecting my health and joints I found a definite need to change my life style. So far I have lost 12 lbs with exercise and smart food choices. I can say that with determination you are never too old to get into better shape!

Pretty fun

A review that encompasses both hula and tahitian videos (I didn't want to post in four different places):

OK! So I have to say I was a bit doubtful regarding the whole 'tahitian dance makes you fit' thing (I've seen some pretty chunky gals doing this dance, and granted, their hip flexibility is far superior than mine, but they are nonetheless, not in very great shape). Kili of course has abs that could probably knock you unconscious but, at the same time, they wouldn't choose someone who didn't have a 34 pack for a fitness dvd now would they? Anyway, I started off with abs & buns and moved on to Tahitian hip hop (not very hip-hoppish), one after the other. I got through abs and buns without much trouble, except I had done some exercising the day before so my legs were pretty sore (I haven't exercised in a while...) and I couldn't really do many of squatting repetitions because my legs would hurt like no ones business. Although I was able to continue on to the next video without there being much of an issue, I will say that I sweated like no ones business. I mean, I don't usually sweat, but I SWEATED BAD. It was kind of gross. I don't know if it's the fact that it's 100 degrees where I live or if it's the area where I did it, OR if it was the actual video, but like I said, it was gross. Anyway, it's actually a pretty fun set of videos. The whole hip thing is beyond me, though. Maybe once I keep doing it I'll notice some more extensive hip flexibility (hopefully because it looks REALLY cool), but for right now, I don't have much, so it's a little difficult to keep up with the gals, especially when they walk and sway (you want me to walk, move my arms and sway my hips all AT THE SAME TIME- WUT?). Like I said, hopefully, I'll get it down at least half-way to their hip flexibility because doing these moves is pretty awesome. You'll have a lot of fun, at least I did. It's not something that, say, an advanced, super ripped exerciser will find challenging (except the hip swaying), but for people who aren't anywhere near Kili's appearance, I'll say you'll sweat, your legs will be sore, and you'll have FUN! I did two and the time just flew by. Of course there were moments when I had to stop and wipe the sweat off (sorry, I can't walk, sway, move arms and wipe sweat off all at the same time) and at times they went a little too quickly but other than that, it was pretty decent, fun experience and I think it's worth the cheap price. It's a fun alternative if you're not feeling Jillian Michaels and her dead lifts. I'll let you know tomorrow if it kills my abs though... I know my legs will be dead, but the abs... I don't know... I'm really looking forward to doing the cardio hula and tahitian cardio on Sunday!


Fun and a nice change

These workouts are completely different from other dance workouts. The atmosphere and instructions are enough to make me feel like I'm in the islands. As a beginner it has been friendly enough for me to not feel completely inadequate and has allowed me to continue improving each time I do it. I find these videos to be among my favorite. They have a warm up section, a teaching section (which is the majority), a section where you do the dance 3 times, and a cool down. They are approximately 30 minutes in length. Youtube has a number of demo videos on it for you to see what they are like.


fun but low-intensity

I ordered this video looking for a fun way to work get cardio and work my abs. This is a pretty low-impact workout, but I do get my heart rate up (a little) and can feel a stretch in my torso. Though it's not as hard a workout as I was looking for, but it is fun, the group performing is in beautiful, athletic (not super-skinny) shape, and my husband likes to watch me exercise.


Fun workout

I have Kili's other set of Island Girl workouts; Tahitian Cardio and Tahitian Hip Hop and I think they are all great. You won't get a major workout or sweat going on, but after completing each 30 min. workout, I usually have some perspiration and increased heartbeat. Hula itself is not exactly high-energy so it should not be expected that you'll burn 500 calories from one of these workouts. It's fun, very thorough and visually appealing. The girls are in great shape and the since they are outside, the island in the background helps you enjoy the exercises that much more. I've danced tahitian and hawaiian hula and taken classes and I feel that Kili's moves are legit and she seems knowledgable in the dance. Definitely great for hula beginners and/or women who want to get some form of mild, fun exercise.


Great workout for a change of pace

I've done the Island Girl Hula Cardio workout three times now and the Abs and Buns workout twice. I really like them both but so far have enjoyed the Cardio Hula section more simply because I felt the pace of the workout was better. I purchased these workouts because I wanted something different after doing the 30 Day Shred and Biggest Loser workouts and this is certainly a nice change of pace. The first time around, I stumbled my way through but not for lack of direction or spot on cuing from Kili-I just lack coordination. I definitely felt the burn and was perspiring by the end of the dance. The stretches in the cool down felt soooo good. Just a few hours later my thighs and gluts were screaming! But I couldn't wait to do it again. Currently I am sitting at my desk at work moving my hips as I try to mimic the fluid movement of Kili and her dancers. A few things I will say are that you may not enjoy this if you like hardcore workouts. I mean seriously this is hula dancing! If you prefer a relaxing workout that focuses mainly on the abs and lower body and don't mind working out barefoot, then I say try this workout. If you get easily frustrated or aren't that coordinated you may struggle with this. Just relax and now it doesn't have to be perfect as you will get better and more fluid with each time through. I still haven't done the whole dance without missing a couple of steps but I still enjoy the routine and the more I do it the more I sweat and the more I want to come back and do it again. I've even noticed that I walk differently because my hips are looser from doing this workout and I slouch less as well. Not too shabby after having done this for just a few days. The DVD allows choose which section you want to do; warm up, the workout, the dance, or the cool down. That's helpful if you want to combine both workouts, that way you don't have to go through the entire workout if you don't want to.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started the 100 push-ups program, but I have been more than pleased with the results. I'm on week 4 and can already see huge progress. I haven't had a strong upper body and it's something I've been wanting to remedy. This book was the solution! It's laid out so easily and allows for steady improvement. Can't wait to try the other programs the author has created!


Excellent Concept - worth the money

Fantastic book. Inspirational and easy to follow. I'm 57 years old, recently had shoulder surgery (right) and wrist surgery (left), but find that I can still do the program (week 3 day 3). I especially like the emphasis on warm-up and stretching to help prevent injuries. My daughter and one of her friends are also doing the program.

4 stars instead of 5 only for two reasons: 1. neither the website nor related iPhone application use the same program as the book. This is confusing and unhelpful. Is the book more current or the website/iPhone ap? 2. The book fails to tell you how to test yourself once you have completed the 7-week program. This information is easy to find on the website, but it is a strange oversight.

Highly Recommend!!!!

i highly recommend this book. i am 26 years old. i played a varsity ncaa sport and have been in great, athletic shape my whole life... until fall of 2008, when i was in a car accident and tore a ligament in my lower back. i went through weekly medical treatment, physical therapy, and post-physical therapy training until early 2010. needless to say, i was no longer in shape. i had poor balance and gained a lot of weight. i have since lost 36 pounds and have been able to start easing back into sports.

this book is not limited to giving a long list of available exercises. it provides excellent strategies for making life-long changes in all dimensions of your life including diet. it provides an excellent 24 week workout schedule (plus an additional 6 weeks before entering this schedule if you have never done any exercise before in your life). this might seem like an exceptionally long workout schedule, but this book is not geared towards the get ripped quick schemes you hear about. the goal and purpose of this book is to encourage life changes that will allow you to maintain and improve on your results for the rest of your life. if you simply diet, then when the diet is over, you will gain back what you lost; thereby losing your gains.

my appreciation of this book comes from its commitment to help you get healthy and stay healthy. if you want an 8 pack by the end of the month, look elsewhere. if you want to get ripped in a healthy, steady fashion and stay that way for the rest of your life, get this book.

also, this books section on dieting is good. but, i would recommend getting another source for information on this aspect of your life and use this section of the book as a supplement to that other source. i strongly recommend Insanity by Beachbody. i do the workouts recommended by the book reviewed here, and on the days off, i do the Insanity workouts (for cardio). the Insanity workouts are supposed to be daily, but i just do them every other day or so. but, the main reason why i recommend the Insanity package here is because it has a much more thorough guide to nutrition. the book and Insanity together give you everything you need to know about nutrition, including simple formulas to calculate exactly how many calories you should intake daily and a very large variety of healthy AND DELICIOUS meals.

Great book!

I must admit, I was skeptical of buying a book with excercises. I own a series of DVD workouts including P90x, insanity, and the pit. I love all of these DVDs but the problem is the ab workout is always the same. But this book really has multiple ab workout routines that I implement in my workouts that these DVDs dont have. I 100% recomend this book to anyone who wants to get a good ab routine going. It even has a routine for pregnant women!

If you want to understand more about your abs this book is a good book to get. It is full of different routines for the abs so you can pick
and choose or create your own.


Some outdated material but kind of useful

Key points:
-In this book there is still the belief that muscles, specially in the abdominal area, can be isolated with specific exercises;
-It dedicates a whole chapter on using "the machines", which most fitness experts educated in the last ten years will disagree with;
-Has "power nutrition recipes" along with the general nutritional and fitness advice;
-It dedicates a chapter on how to take care of your lower back;
-Because the rest of the body is also important, it dedicates seven pages to back, chest, arms, legs and shoulders;
-It has more than a hundred pages of ilustrated ab exercises, most of which you can do at home and even at the office.

Recommendation: If you're already fit and just need to push your abs a little bit further, buy it. If not, then buy a newer book on TOTAL BODY WORKOUTS (like those edited by Men's or Women's Health), abs are just a part of your body, and if you don't eat well and do regularly both aerobic exercises and weight-lifting (and I don't mean pressing 300 lbs.) you will never see your toes no matter how many abs you do.

P.D.: It is in deed a fitness classic, a pretty good book in its time.

Easy to follow

The book provides useful tips, variations on exercises and detailed instructions.
The illustrations are clear and detailed, highlighting the targeted muscles for the specific exercise.

There's even a step-by-step program suited for your body. I have not used it (I just got mine!) but I will look into it later.


Things the gym doesn't teach you......

Worth every penny. You learn the correct way & can reproduce it at the gym. It's easy, it's well put together & I take it w/me to the gym.
Every woman should read this before attempting w/o a trainer. It's also nice to show your trainer when he is doing it all wrong, LOL

Great book - easy to read, understand

I teach a fitness class for women over 50 and although this is not targeted to that age group specifically, many of the exercises parallel what we teach and passing the book around class and showing the women what muscle groups are being worked has help to motivate our group.


Very helpful

This book really helps me see my body, and work the muscles I need to in the gym. The pictures are great, the instructions clear, and the exercises chosen are safe, fun and effective.

It also helped me get much more out of the services of a professional trainer. I read ahead and knew what I wanted to work on, had practiced the exercises, and knew how they felt. The trainer then could add his broad knowledge and experience to my program. I've had a lot of injuries, and so I needed to be cautious about being pushed. This book helped me have the clarity to ask for what I needed and work out in a way that is safe for me.

It's a great supplement to an Anatomy and Physiology class. Why not visualize and feel in your own body what you are learning in class?

This DVD gives a good idea of all the exercises you can do with your Bowflex besides just the basics. Purvis is a little annoying to listen to, but Im in the fitness industry and have survived his lectures before and they are always informative. This will help people not turn their Bowflex into an expensive clothing rack!

Excellent meditation aide and biofeedback game

I actually purchased the bundle pack. I played the first game, Journey to the Wild Divine, for about a month before I started playing the second game. There were a few times that the first game left me frustrated because I'd end up in a loop that took me to the same place repeatedly. Took me awhile, for example, to take Sophia very literally and follow her dog. (You'll understand when you play the game). I also found the music irritating enough at times that I turned it off. Yet, I still rated the game as a 5 because it did what it was supposed to. It lowered my stress level and enabled me to do meditation exercises without falling asleep. Yes, I know that sounds contradictory that a person with high stress levels would fall asleep when trying to meditate, but I was the best at it. I ended up absolutely loving the Journey, despite its problems. Then, I tried Wild Divine. It is such an improvement over Journey it's unbelievable. The graphics and sound are much better. It's pleasing to the eye, and the music is mostly chant or gentle instrumental. There are more activities, each of which is more challenging than its predecessor. All of the activities are more challenging than in the first game, even if you set the game at its easiest level - which is another great advantage of the Wild Divine - it can be set at different difficulty levels. Realize that this is actually a contradiction of terms. The better you become at the game, the calmer you will become. So, the challenge is to learn to meditate, relax, and accept life. You are given more guidance on meditation procedures that you can use. Finally, if you so choose, you can just do activities that you pick. And, if you replay the Wisdom Quest and don't want to wait on the graphics, you can click on them and bypass them. The games are a definite two thumbs up. But, do make sure you get the silly pear at the beginning of the 2nd game.


great game, and not Hindu haha

the game is wonderful, and its landscapes and backgrounds, as well as the story is so beautifully done. You feel like you could step into it. It is not a "religious experience, though, even if there is a touch of Buddhist philosophy along with the New Agey feel. Anyway, Buddhism is a philosophy rather than a religion anyway.
The exercises are very beneficial, and I wonder why the other commentator bought this at all instead of a pure technical biofeedback program.
It is a game, and you learn about meditative and relaxing techniques along with expanding your horizon somewhat


Not recreation, religion

I expected bio-feedback, and that the game should be a bit New Age. But, this is a game of multiple deities, to become one of the `blue people' was not what I wanted. I have played most of the passage and technically the game works. There is no health emphasis, no graduated relaxation or heart rate counters. Rather, you become proficient at controlled relaxation in order to meet a contrived deity, then you are indoctrinated while in a state of hypnosis. I wanted an entertaining way to relax, not to become quasi Hindu.
