This is my FAVORITE workout!

by D. White from Atlanta GA on 2010-06-05
No matter what new work out or DVD or class or project I take on, I always come back to the Firm. The exercises are so simple and yet so effective. It's easy to add more difficulty by modifying the moves or using heavier weights. It's also great to use in between different workouts. Right now I use JUST the cardio portions (because I love Jen Carman) to get warmed up and moving and then do the 30 Day Shred. Gives me a Good 40 minute workout. I'm usually sweating buckets and bone tired!

No beginner

by Meme from on 2010-01-24
This is NOT for beginners. They are way too quick to be able to follow. Yet I can follow other videos without problem. If you're a beginner, get either another of the Firm "Basics": Abs, Buns & Thighs Workout. Or you can also try Cardio for Beginners with Petra Kolber--both titles available at Amazon, by the way.

Good Beginning intro to The Firm

by mnhtarheel from Seattle, WA on 2008-09-01
I started doing the "Firm Basics" again along Leslie Sansone after not exercising regularly for a while. This series teaches proper form, and is a good intro to the "The Firm". While it is probably too easy for high-intermediate and advanced exercisers, it is definitely great for beginners. I plan to advance further with other "Firm" workouts. I feel they offer the best all-around fitness program and you can grow with it. I wish this series was offered on DVD.

Not just for beginners!

by Leslie W. Price from Chicago, IL on 2007-01-23
It's true that this is probably a more challenging workout if you're a beginner. However, I often use this workout on days when I'm just not feeling energetic enough to do one of the FIRM's more advanced tapes. I still get a decent workout, and I'm not worried about injuring myself by doing more than my body is ready to do. Also, you can use heavier weights on some of the exercises to make it more challenging.

Once you're feeling more fit and more comfortable with the FIRM, you should probably try some of the tougher FIRM workouts. Keep this in your FIRM rotation, though! It's a great complement to all of the other FIRM tapes and DVDs.

Really for beginners

by jor from Philippines on 2006-03-07
PROs
- Light.
- Exercises are broken down so they're easier to learn.
- Clear and well-timed cueing with some instruction on proper form.
- Perky, happy instructors.

CONs
- I had already been exercising for about 5 weeks with the Susan Harris, Jayne Poteet, Standing Legs, and Upper Body firm videos when I tried this. I didn't even break a sweat, and I couldn't hit my target heart rate. This isn't really a bad thing but it would be more accurate to label the video "For beginners". In fact, if you're a beginner, then try this first. It'll give you an idea of what the Firm videos do and how they do it, and it'll prep you for the harder videos.

The Firm Cross Trainers: The Tortoise Workout [VHS] The Firm Cross Trainers: The Tortoise Workout [VHS]
List Price: $19.98

Description

Don't be offended by the title: "tortoise" doesn't mean that you're sluggish and round. Rather, the point is that by using slower moves and heavier weights, you build strength and complement the faster workouts you do on other days. However, the reps in this 1993 60-minute video aren't all that slow--usually about four seconds, when six seconds is more typical for heavy weights. You'll need a variety of dumbbells, a barbell, and a short and tall step. The instructor presents a good variety of effective upper- and lower-body exercises, although modifications using dumbbells could have been shown in the barbell segments. The strength moves are interspersed with short aerobic/step segments of ballroom dance moves that sometimes don't quite match the music. Use this video to cross-train with one of the faster workouts, such as The Firm: The Hare Workout, which uses light weights and a faster tempo. --Joan Price

This is a classic workout from The Old Firm.

These old Firm videos can't be beat.

As far as I'm concerned the new firm workouts in no way conform to the scientifically and beautifully formulated original firm videos!

I myself will only use the old firm videos and the new whfn videos produced by Anna Benson

Get the real deal, don't be fooled by the look alikes!

Nice mix of weight lifting, step aerobics and dance

by Margaret P. from Boulder, CO USA on 2005-12-20
The Tortoise" is an exercise tape that follows the 'circuit' design -- it alternates between aerobics, stretching, and weightlifting. The movements are moderately slow and typically require you to really use your muscles. The moves are all low impact. A few of movements are loosely based on dances -- Tango, Cha Cha, etc. Some equipment is requried: 3 to 20 lb dumbells, a low 3" to 7" step, and a tall 18" to 22" step. The instructor is pretty, muscular, and Rubinesque; and she does a nice job directing. The producer spent enough money on the background, direction and supporting exercisers to produce a pleasant tape.

Taken together, "The Tortoise" gives a very good muscle building workout for the entire body. It also provides a good aerobic workout. There isn't much for general range of motion, but all major muscle groups are stretched, some repeatedly. This tape was intended to be used with "The Hare", which has a greater emphasis on aerobics.

If you tend to do more aerobics than weight bearing exercise, this tape will be good for your body. My only problem with the tape is that the music and format just aren't as fun as "The Hare".

This workout has background music that is enjoyable and varied, some of it inspired by dances (e.g., Tango). Visually, the workout quite entertaining: colorful backdrop, statues, murrals on the wall, and a variety of people exercising in different clothing. It looks like you are in a class with many other people.

almost perfect

Tracie Long's physique should be enough of an inspiration, even if the good sequencing of this workout doesn't impress you.The aerobic segments are a tad lame but I just"do my own thing"during those few minutes of rest between heavy sets. And it is enjoyable-the time seems to fly.Excellent.I bought 2 copies in case one breaks!!!

would be 5 if a little tougher

by Michelle Fraley from Tucson, AZ United States on 2004-09-29
As someone who generally loves The Firm series and Tracie Long, I was right in assuming that this workout would be a winner. As always, Tracie keeps you motivated without being annoying - also the background people stay quiet which is nice. My overall impression of this video i:
1. the toning and strength segments using the weights are top-notch - when she is using the barbell - I had no trouble doing the same exercises using two dumbbells. These segments were tough and gave me a good workout.
2. the 5 "cardio" segments which utilized classic dances for the routines were way too easy and did not even get my heart rate up at all - to be honest after I finished this workout I did 20 minutes of Tae Bo for some cardio benefit.
3. To summarize, get this video if you are looking for a good strength-building workout for the legs and upper body. Try the other video in this series "The Hare" or the classic firm series videos for cardio.

Excellent Workout

by Rence from Chicago, IL United States on 2003-03-16
When I first viewed this tape, I hated ballroom the music for the aerobic step parts. I was intimidated by the fancy footwork in those step parts as well, I thought I'd trip all over myself. I was not too eager for the long sets of leg presses...and I avoided it for about two weeks. It didn't take me more than one workout to get hooked on it though. I really like it now. Even the music has gotten better for me, and the fancy footwork is really fun. There is only one aerobic part, the "charleston" that I entirely skip simply because I don't like it. Nothing wrong with the cueing or the instructor, I just don't particularly like the routine. So I do something else instead or just skip it and move on to the next part. It's only a few minutes long and won't make or break the rest of the workout. The Tortoise and the Hare are crosstrainers that work oppositely. So, the Tortoise uses slower music so that you can use heavier weights (At my current level, I can use up to 15-lbs with dumbells or a 35lb barbell and weights for military presses and biceps curls, squats, etc). Among other things, there are two long sets of leg presses on a 14-inch box (or a box height that is best for you based on your current level), a set of weighted squats and a set of weighted dip-backs, and relatively long sets of upper body work. So the workout is as challenging as you make it for yourself, and it's emphasis is on muscle sculpting. In other words, a beginner should have little problem doing the workout with light or no weights as he/she progresses. The advanced should get good results with heavier weights and proper form. The Hare, it's corresponding crosstrainer, on the contrary, is faster and its emphasis is on cardio work. It has several fast aerobic sections on a 6-inch aerobic step, and the heaviest arm weights (during the aerobic sections) will probably be only 5 ot 7-lb dumbells, ok, maybe 10lbs if the segments aren't too fast for you. Then there are two sets of lighter weighted leg presses, and like 12min of ab/hip/thigh floorwork. So you crosstrain by alternating the two tapes so that your body does not get too used to (or too comfortable) doing the same thing. Plus when you do the heavier work, you can recover while doing the lighter work the next day.I really like the setting of the old FIRM tapes. The settings are light, airy and IMOHO very well produced. I like the "class" setting more than I like the single lone instructor, but that's just me. The music varies thoughout and with such a variety, there is something for everyone. The instructor is strong and motivates me to do my best work. The cueing is very good as well, especially with the fancy footwork. The instructor is very experienced and her demeanor is professional and inspiring. I really don't take too well with the bouncy cream puff types, and really appreciate the "just do it" instructors who don't gab in between stuff, or sound like minnie mouse, etc. But that's just me. Everyone will find their own motivators.

Not a "walk" at all

by Sarah E. Langston from Little Rock, AR on 2010-01-23
I am familiar with Leslie Sansone's walking DVDs. I already own the 1, 2 and 3 mile series so I was looking for something different. Well, I am disapointed in this DVD. It's not walking at all, unless you count the 5 minutes you spend walking in the warm up. After that, it's just standing around doing different exercises with weights. If you want to walk as a form of exercise, don't buy this DVD!

PERFECT

We do the 2 mile walk everyday. It is just the right pace and not too fast. Good instruction's and a chance to thank God everyday.

Love the Firm Wave!

by Rebecca Toy from Aberdeen, WA United States on 2010-07-23
I have worked out faithfully since in my 20's but after several injuries and many years later, I had put on 15 pounds and gotten pretty out of shape. I had tried to maintain as best I could by doing light yoga and walking with a few weight lifting sessions tossed in occasionally but then I tore my shoulder muscle and was reduced to just walking. After months of physical therapy my shoulder was improved enough to do some very light weight lifting a few days a week so I added that to walking but I still wasn't seeing much improvement. In February 2010 I turned 60 and woke up to the fact that if I was going to get into shape I needed to work harder at it and make changes in my diet such as cutting way back on sugar and focusing on eating only healthy foods in the right amounts. I also started looking for a more complete workout I could do at home every day. I had done Firm workouts many years ago and they had really helped me be in great shape so when I saw the Wave workout I thought I should give it a try. I got it in April and after doing the intro workout one time, I have done one of the workouts at least 6 days a week since. At first I wondered if I was crazy to think I could do them at my age and fitness level but I worked through the frustration and kept going anyway and in a few weeks I was doing them pretty well and noticing a difference already. Within 3 months I had increased the weights from 3 to 5 pounds and had lost over 13 pounds. I also like that the workouts are from 10-40 minutes apiece and still very effective. I am now healthier and in better shape than I have been in many years. I credit the diet changes for at least half of my success and am glad I 'kicked' my sugar addiction but I also feel the Firm Wave workout does deliver if done consistently. If I can accomplish this at my age and fitness level then anyone can.

Stick to the Transfirmer, this is not a strenuous workout

by Lizzy B from New York, NY on 2010-07-13
Let me preface this by saying that I am not a super fit person; I am moderately fit, but I'm not like the Firm instructors!
I found the Wave fun and novel, but not a great work out. I think it might be great for beginners, those who need something fun to stay motivated, and not long enough to discourage them. But if you've been using the Firm already, as I have, you may find this less-than-satisfying. I've done both the included workouts, and though I broke a sweat, I don't feel nearly as worked-out and good as I do with the Transfirmer and earlier Firm workouts. The earlier things were "easy" in terms of learning the moves, but you can make them harder and harder increasing the weights. These workouts, using their own cardio weights, makes it difficult to know what resistance to use, and I found that the reps were often so fast that I had to use light weights, even though I wanted more resistance.
Maybe I'd feel more satisfied if the workouts were longer-- 30 minutes and 40 minutes are just not enough, unless you are an absolute beginner. Maybe I will try the other workout videos made to use the Wave.
For now, I will only use this on days that I am too tired to do a regular workout, and go back to the older Firm product that maybe are a little more boring, but a whole lot more effective.

Well rounded work out!

by Mary Em from NY on 2010-07-11
Love it! The workouts are concise and fast moving. You get little bursts of everything from kick boxing to light weights to crunches. All of it is easily adaptable. I agree that at times the footwork moves a little too quickly but you should be able to get it after a few tries. After just a couple of weeks I am seeing and feeling huge changes. I follow the included schedule along with daily walks and yoga. I don't see myself getting bored with this too quickly. I can also see myself pulling this out periodically for a quick tune up.

I bought the product NEW but when it arrived it was used dvds wouldn't play piece missing and there was cat hair in the dvds when opened and I have to pay to have it shipped back. So I really didn't get the chance to try the product. Not pleased with the product or Amazon.

Love to workout with this!

by Roxy from on 2010-07-01
I've been a firm fan for a while now, I have past products from them that I still like to use. But, with the introduction of the wave... this system has become the method of exercising that I use the most. One great reason is that I like how you can choose the speedier options, on avg. 20 mins in length, for those days you fall short on time and still feel like you completed a good workout. I feel good after each and every time I workout with this system. Overall, it's an engaging workout where the time flies as you do it. I use mine weekly. Definitely recommend this system for those of you who want to enjoy working out and get the benefits from exercising.

Four fast miles-- high calorie burn.

by Cynthia Danute Cekauskas, LCSW from Savannah, Georgia on 2010-07-23
I liked this DVD much better than Leslie Sansone - Walk Away the Pounds - Super Fat Burning - 3 Miles or Leslie Sansone - Walk Away the Pounds Express - Super Challenge. Of course those tapes are considered to be beginning or intermediate level workouts. Leslie Sansone Walk Slim: Fast and Firm 4 Really Big Miles, Leslie Sansone: Walk at Home - 5 Mile Fat Burning Walk and Leslie Sansone's Walk Slim - 4 Fast Miles (2-Disc Set) have all been recommended for intermediate to advanced level exercisers. Boy, and can you tell the difference! This is the first of the group I have tried having been exposed to it at an exercise class of St Theresa Catholic Church in Sunny Hills, Florida. As Leslie Sansone herself says "Even the warm-up is a little peppy."

I don't know if it is this particular DVD or one of the others I cited but at least one of them introduces the audience to "boosted walking" or mild or gentle jogging. Most of this indoor walking tape is done to a 3-4 MPH walking pace. In the second mile it speeds up to a 12 minute mile and in the third mile a 10 minute mile. As Leslie says "You don't have to worry about following the steps. Just keep pace with the music." This is so true and so stress relieving. Unlike some of the FIRM tapes where these very young, very skinny instructors force you to learn complex moves just to keep up with them, Leslie's instructions are simple but effective. I can FEEL myself start to sweat! She admits herself: "This is not about being perfect. This is about getting a good, healthy workout."

Really Fun!!!

by Heather N. Voss from Lyons, IL USA on 2010-06-03
I have many of Leslie's work out DVD's and I love them all. The three mile ones were getting a bit too easy so I decided to try 4 miles. This DVD is so fun that I hardly noticed that it was an extra mile. I worked hard and felt great afterward but it went by very quickly!! She introduces some new fun moves that made the workout unique from some of the others. Can't wait to do it tomorrow!!

I like it, but hate the music.

by Iamamatt from Los Angeles, CA on 2010-05-10
I love Leslie Sanson Walking Videos. This particular DVD does not do it for me. I think it is the music..the very first song turns me off. I need music that motivates me and makes me want continue to work out just because of the music. There is only one song in the DVD that I like and it is at mile 4 and it is the last song before the cool down. I tried using mute but then I get off cue because I don't know when she is going change the steps. I still do the workout because it is a great workout but I suffer through the music.

Always good!

by Carolyn D. Blount from on 2010-05-08
Leslie is always chipper and great at what she does, this is a great DVD and it makes you sweat, the guy is a little stiff but overall the DVD is good.

Love it, effective and very adaptable...

by Faith from chicago, IL on 2010-04-29
I got this DVD as part of a larger set being offered. Of all the DVD's I like this one the best. I hadn't worked out in a very long time, but had just quit a very physical job and after a few months of leaving that job I realized I needed to up my activity or I was going to be out of shape very quickly.

This tape really does give you a nice overall workout. The thing I really like about it is that there are a few basic moves that can be adapted to increase the intensity and up your heart rate. For example, by simply sinking down into more of a squatting position, the "side steps" become much more challenging. Also, instead of just stepping side to side, if you want you can take 4 steps in one direction, then 4 back, and you are essentially doing what is known as a "crab walk" in calisthenics. Also, my knees cannot take any impact whatsoever, so I found myself sort of dreading the boosted walking segments. That is, til I realized I could just hop on my mini-trampoline while she is doing this mild jog! I also found the stretchy band segment kind of disruptive and preferred to keep my heart rate up, so again I hopped on my mini-tramp, keeping my heart rate up while enjoying the music, pacing and listening to her motivation.

If there is something in the workout you are unable to do, uncomfortable with, or have simply "outgrown" in terms of fitness, it is easy to get creative and adapt it to customize it to meet whatever your needs are at the time! This is the fastest and most fun 53 minutes of exercise I've ever done and look forward to continuing to do. So glad I found Leslie and this particular workout!

Best workout

by Beth from Denver, CO on 2010-03-15
I love this DVD. Really is the "perfect workout." Easy to follow, works the whole body. Upbeat, fun. I do this DVD twice a week. I also do Ellen Barrett's "Crunch - Super SlimDown: Pilates Yoga Blend" once a week and her other workouts "Slim Sculpt" and "Fat Burning Fusion." I think "Crunch - Burn & Firm Pilates" is the most well-rounded of all the DVDs, it provides a great ab workout section (which Slim Sculpt and Fat Burning Fusion don't have). All of Ellen Barrett's DVDs are great, easy to follow. She's a positive, upbeat instructor who gives just the right amount of encouragement and guidance.

Ellen Barret is great!

I have been doing this dvd for 3 weeks. I do the 20 minute Turbo Jam workout, then I follow it up with this. It's about 45 minutes. You don't feel as if you are working terribly hard, but after about the 4th time doing the worout, I not only feel but I can see a difference! I have a problem with "back fat". Between the 2 workouts, this one especially, my posture & back fat problem have gotten so much better! My 5 year old said to me this morning "Wow, Mommy, you are getting so skinny!".

Great standing pilates workout

Great workout for the whole body, particularly the legs. I love doing those plies. I complement this workout with Slim Sculpt, which really works the arms. I had thought that maybe I was not getting enough cardio by doing this workout, but not so - I also do the workouts by Jillian Michaels and have no problem getting through them; although her plank work is much tougher than Ellen's.

Great DVD! Still using 5 years later!

by R. Moore from Charleston, WV on 2009-11-16
I bought this DVD as the first of many Crunch Fitness DVD's that I would buy in the future. Ellen is great. She really works every muscle on your body. I was never so out of breath that I couldn't talk. The DVD is about 48 minutes and was so easy to get through. I was never bored or ready to turn it off and lay on the couch. I have many other Crunch DVD's and they are all instructed clearly. Sometimes, I can't follow other DVD's because the instructors don't give clear instructions in enough time to follow them correctly. Crunch videos give you a cue to change your movements in plenty of time allowing you to stay on pace.
I recommend this DVD to anyone wanting to get in shape from a recent injury or postpartum.

Ellen does a great job in her instruction, even if your viewing her video for the first time you can keep up with her. Your heart starts pumping in no time. I found this video to be a good workout for the legs & arms, not to mention posture. I would recommend this & her other workout "Slim Sculpt".

Good for the taller athlete

by Kelly Leighton from Churchland,VA on 2010-06-07
This is my second purchase of this Xercise Ball. The first Ball developed an outpouching which eventually blew while a co-worker was sitting on the ball.

First recommendation, inspect the ball carefully to ensure it is flawless. Then monitor the condition of the ball, and if the outer skin begins to peel, replace it!

I do purchase a new ball far enough in advance to 'air' out for about three months on the porch before I bring it indoors for use. The new plastic smell is pretty intense fresh out of the box.

I use the ball every day in some pretty demanding circumstances, so for it to last a year is pretty impressive.

This is the ideal circumference for a taller person to use. At six foot plus, it's much easier on the physique than a smaller cm Ball. Quality product.

Great all-inclusive Abs Diet Tome for Women

by S. Cooper from Chicago, IL USA on 2010-07-12
This book brings together the different components of the Abs Diet lifestyle and handily combines them all, serving as a great reference guide.
True to Abs Diet style, inspirational true stories are peppered throughout the book, prompting the "why didn't I find this sooner" thought.
There are several variations on the meal plans that put together real-life examples of how the Abs Diet looks across a couple weeks and highlights how many options there are, never leaving you feeling like you're eating the same stuff all the time.
Also included are specific exercises and plans for women - dealing with menstrual issues, pre- and post- pregnancy, menopause.
If I had one wish, it would be that the exercise pages were glossy coated pages with color photos. However I love that this book is paperback and has a smaller profile, so wouldn't want to give that up.

Abs Diet book for Women

by Momoffour from Boise, ID on 2010-03-27
I was hoping for more specific information on what to eat and when. This book is okay, but it has a lot of information that wasn't really necessary or needed by me, and not enough of what I was looking for.

Great Book

Outcome a delightful surprise

by Gayle Schmidt from Ft. Myers, Florida USA on 2009-08-16
I've just discovered I have severe osteoporosis, and a dear friend (also with this condition) has been improving her health based on an exercise program that relies heavily on the exercises in this book. She had me over to learn her regimen. Amazon is where I went immediately to order up my own copy, but I could only find the book sold used at prices ranging from one cent to several dollars. The condition was listed as "good" if I remember. I thought, "OK, at one cent, I can order a more expensive book later if this arrives trashed". Well, it was in first-rate condition - not a tear, no underlining, no creases, nothing revealing past use. It appears to have never been used. I'd go this route again in a heartbeat.

This Book Gave Me Back My Pre-Baby Body!!!

by William H. Kelsey from the planet of Vulcan on 2007-08-27
To be honest, my body looks even better than it did in high school. I had picked this book up when I was 20 years old and pregnant (this is William's wife Jen) and I was already planning ahead to try to get a descent body back. All of the women in my family had basically let themselves go after popping out a kid, and I didn't want people thinking that I was pregnant three years after the baby had been born. I started working with this book (almost all weight training with very little cardio, maybe 2 hours of step aerobics a week) when my baby was 2 weeks old, and I followed a sensible diet (not the one in this book since I'm a veggie, but something similar). By the time I had my next doctor's appointment (6 weeks postbirth), my weight was lower than prior to pregnancy, my body looked better than when I had been in high school, and my blood pressure was the lowest that it had ever been. This book and its philosophy has given me the best body of my life (not to mention more time for myself and the kids since I don't have to do endless hours of ineffective cardio)! My husband loves my cut but not massive body and girls ten younger ask me how did I get into such great shape. After this book I moved on to the "Perfect Parts" which gives greater results, but this is definitiely the one to begin with.

OUTSTANDING...GREAT RESULTS!!!!!!!

Effective Program and Reference Guide

by Goldie from Chicagoland area on 2006-03-27
This was the first exercise-related book I ever bought. I was in college at the time, and wanted to lose about 15-20 pounds. I was able to create my own workout by using the exercises I preferred, and I ended up losing a total of 40 pounds in 10 months.

Needless to say, I was thrilled with the results, and still use this book as a reference guide.

Kudos, Dr. Vedral!

by Goth Hippy from Florida on 2010-05-06
Excellent! While I don't agree with everything she says, this is by far one of the better books on women's fitness out there. Here's why:

1. A realistic time frame. Too many books out there make empty promises like 'lose 20 pounds in two weeks!' or some other nonsense such as, 'eat anything you want and you'll have the perfect bod', etc. etc. Not with this book. Dr. Vedral sets a realistic time frame - one year. Which is great! Not only is it realistic, it gives the reader TIME to adjust to a new routine, especially if you've never worked out with weights before, or haven't exercised in a while. Which is as it should be. Real, lasting change takes TIME. It doesn't happen overnight people, no matter what the trainers on the 'Biggest Loser' say!

2. She outlines the equipment used, and has a program for those who belong to a gym, and those who don't. There's no guesswork here - she specifies EXACTLY how many reps, sets, weight, etc. And she also explains common weight lifting terms as well.

3. This program IS tough. 3 sets of varying reps with increasing weight. Yeah. I concur with one reviewer in that you may not want to start out at 3 sets. Perhaps start out with one or two and work your way up. Or see how much you can do the first time, and go up gradually from there. Or, check out her other books - Bottoms Up for instance, isn't as intense. There are plenty of previews on Amazon ^^

4. Before and after photos- great motivation!

5. Realistic eating plan - 1800 calories, that's fabulous! Plus it makes sense, as you're working harder than usual, you'll need extra fuel for energy.

6. Very clear instruction on the exercises; she definitely knows what she's talking about in regards to correct form. The pictures are very helpful.

The only thing I disagree with is the 'bombing techniques', or rather the 'training to failure' technique. I agree with Bill Pearl on this, in that it can actually be counter productive (see his book, 'Getting Stronger' for more info). Some techniques on 'bombing' certain body parts are pretty advanced. So do exercise caution when using these. Though, in fairness, she recommends these techniques only after you've been working out a few months. Still, do be careful!

All in all, though, I do recommend this. don't let it be the ONLY book on women's fitness, however; Books by Denise Austin (wonderful!), Margeret Richard (HIGHLY recommended!) as well as Bill Pearl (he wrote the book on bodybuilding, seriously...) are excellent as well so you can make informed decisions on fitness and nutrition.

I'm going to have to check out her 'Bottoms up' book next :)

it works

I bought this book many years ago and I still refer to it. it really gives you good information on how to make lifting weights part of your life. I recommend this book.

Looks good, but not for me.

by Lucy the Bargain Hunter from on 2004-09-29
I was looking for a program that requires only dumb-bells, but this one uses dumb-bells, bar-bells, a few kinds of benches, and other equipment. Since I don't have a home gym or access to a commercial gym, this book has not been useful for me. But it looks very good for someone who has the proper equipment and wants to use very heavy weights.

One of my faves in the sea of strength training referenences

by from on 2000-11-01
Also one of the first book I added to my now extensive collection of strength training/ body-building/ weight lifting/ fitness references. She is a very inspiring author and the before and after photos (especially of herself) are worth a thousand words. I have changed my weight lifting routine countless times over the past 14 years and this routine is by far the one I use most. It gives proven results and keeps me from "plateauing". I believe those who would enjoy it most are those who are ready for training that packs a wallop! I thought I was fairly strong (for a middle-aged female) before I started on this weight training program. I was surprised at the increase in strength this program gave me. I now use fairly heavy weights (no I can't quite bench press my weight...YET!), but it keeps the compliments coming. What a great feeling to have total strangers comment on your great (and still feminine) muscles and ask you WHERE you work out (not DO you work out?)! This book really kicks up muscle tone and strength by leaps and bounds! You just need to make the time commitment to do this for yourself. If you would rather not work with somewhat heavier weights, Joyce Vedral's "Bottom's Up" and "Definition" books would be a better bet.

Thanks Dr. V!

by M Peret from New Jersey, USA on 2000-08-02
I recently started weightlifing as my primary sport. In the past, I had only strength trained as part of a conditioning regimen for other sports (basketball, rowing, volleyball). At age 35, I decided to start working out again, with the focus on my shape and muscle size and tone. Of all the books I looked at to start my workout regime with, I chose this one. Dr. Vedral covers all of the angles -- diet, motivation, what exercises to do, how to do them (with pictures!), how to do them at home or at the gym, how often to do them, and when to fit in your cardio workouts. It is clear that she knows her stuff, and from her photos, it works. I also have Dr. Vedral's 12-minute workout, which I had pretty good results with. My goal - to look as good as Dr. Vedral! (I have a ways to go....)

Weak, amateur and dangerous.

by Eric Kenyon from California on 2010-06-16
I do not recommend the Firm kettlebell video. It is in no way appropriate for beginners or anyone else. The technique shown is poor quality by any standard. Kettlebells are not toys to be played with, and making up kettlebell exercises gets amateurs in trouble every time. The off-center balance of the kettlebell makes correct technique even more important for safety than when using conventional implements. The Firm have mitigated this danger somewhat by using a kettlebell which is so light as to cancel out any effect unique to the kettlebell. In other words, if you are going to use the Firm kettlebell, you would do just as well (or badly) using a rock or a can of soup, or any other object of similar weight. With excellent kettlebell training information being available in this country for over 8 years, the bad quality of the firm video is inexcusable and frankly puzzling. It would seem to take extra effort to make a video so wrong. The kettlebell video I recommend Enter the Kettlebell! Strength Secret of the Soviet Supermenfor beginners is Enter the Kettlebell by Pavel Tsatsouline.

Kelsie Knows Her Stuff!

by Brenda M from Delaware, USA on 2010-06-03
This is an excellent workout for beginners or advanced. I use a heavier bell for most of the moves, but when I first did this workout with the 5 lb. bell, it was tough! If you are looking for a total body "kicka&**&" workout, Kelsie delivers. She is a seasoned trainer: Kicka%$* Kelsie! She knows what she is doing and what works. This DVD comes with a 5 lb bell so it is very well priced and worth every penny.

It's a known fact that working with kettlebells are an effective and effecient way of exercise to tone and condition the body. While weight training is good, kettlebells engage the total body with each movement, making it a cadio/weight routine all in one. It's been a Soviet military tool for centuries and now it is being used by our own military to train in strength and endurance. Even Hollywood celebs use this tool. What are you waiting for?

Good intro to kettlebell but not the best workout

by J. Gonzalez from Miami, FL USA on 2010-03-17
This is my first time using a kettlebell in any type of workout. I found the FIRM's 5lb kettlebell easy to use but not challenging enough.

The instructor has great energy and her instructions are clear. When you workout with the kettlebell you are doing traditional type moves such as biceps, tricpes, and lunges. You will also do a few swinging moves for your back and arms and moves where you change the kettlebell from hand to the over hand which I found a bit difficult due to the space that you have. I felt at time that I could have dropped the kettlebell a few times.

The most difficult move for me was move uses the kettlebell and while lying down you have to roll your body up into a standing position using one foot and then you roll yourself back down to the floor. That mainly concentrates on your abs.

GRRRRRRREAT!!!

by Reviewing.stuff from VA on 2010-02-12
This is a wonderful, wonderful workout dvd! I get so scared buying dvds because most of the time I just end hating it. I think that this is priced just right, and you get so much workout. The workout is challenging but not too hard and you feel so good during it and afterwards, I've been doing it about 2 weeks and I already feel stronger and am going to go up in weight with the bell. The instructor is very nice/good and the routine is organized in a good way-if that makes sense. It isn't all over the place and it has a variety of movements so you don't get bored. I need to find some more kettle bells workouts-hopefully they will be as good as this one!

I LOVE THIS WORKOUT!

by Allison J. Roberts from Connecticut on 2010-02-04
I wanted a change in my exercise routine so I decided to try working out with a Kettlebell. I have a few Firm Workouts and I love Kelsie Daniels as an instructor so I decided to buy this to try it. Let me just add this little note...I ordered this workout through Amazon on Sunday (1/31/2010) and received it on Wednesday (2/3/2010)! Great shipping Amazon!

I agree with everyone about the Kettlebell itself, it does scrape your knuckles, but because of the reviews on it I was prepared and had bought my own ahead of time.

I did this workout the day I got it and instantly loved it! According to my HR montior I burned 350 calories and I was sweating through pretty much the whole thing. I am pretty impressed with myself that I managed the Turkish roll up move on the second try because that is a hard one! I did found the moves easy to follow so that was also a plus. I am not new to exersise and I was a little doubtful that I would get any kind of workout with a 5 lb Kettlebell so I had an 8 lb one standing by, well I was pretty surprised at how mighty that little 5 lb bell is. I could feel the soreness setting in almost immediately after the workout and my muscles were thoroughly fatigued.

I haven't been this excited about an exercise routine in a long time. I totally recommend this workout to anyone who wants to try working out with a Kettlebell but doesn't know what to do with it!

Fantasatic Product!!

by Sheradan B. Hartman from Peoria, AZ on 2010-07-27
This product is genius! It is especially great for women after pregnancy...Also works better if you are a smaller person who just needs to tone and strengthen the ab muscles. It won't make you lose weight so keep that in mind.

No customer service on this product. Battery malfunctions

by poca from on 2010-07-13
At first very happy and excited to use this product, however, after about one month the battery stopped working and just beeps. Tried to contact customer service and the online web site and unable to contact anyone. No good numbers. It is a waste of money and absolutely no help getting it to work. The idea is great but very unhappy with the product.

Unfortunately only worked for a month

by jamoc from San Francisco, CA on 2010-05-20
Unfortunately this product only worked for a month. Once I replaced the pads and then replaced again, I received the "!" symbol on the unit. This meant 1. unit is not properly connected, 2. covers are still on the pads, 3. pads are worn, or 4. pads are not covering the metal studs attached to the belt. My problem was none of these items. I checked all 3 pads, still no luck. Very disappointing. Just go outside and run, best bet!

Never received my purchase.

by Rhonda J. Mccall from BREAUX BRIDGE, LA, US on 2010-03-15
I never received my purchase. Contacted company several times. Will b e filing a claim. Very disappointed!

Just needed some new pads and worked like advertised...

by Sara J from North Carolina on 2010-03-03
When I ordered the product, I ordered the belt that came with pads, and then I ordered a box of three replacement sets of gel pads for the belt.

With the pads that came with the belt, I wasn't experiencing what was on tv...the "feel of doing crunches" while sitting. I didn't feel anything but small stings. I was able to get up to 60, 70, 80 with no problem. So after about a week, I replaced the pads on the belt with the one out of the 3-pack I bought. And although these pads were also by slendertone, they were packaged differently. After I got them on, I was up to level 20 and started to feel the crunch affect. And at level 45 I feel like I am doing hard crunches. So if you have received your belt and are not receiving the advertised affect, try changing the gel pads. It only took two weeks, but I am finally impressed. :)

In bodybuilding, calf exercises increase the bulk and definition of the upper back and sides of the lower legs. The leg press calf raise is an excellent movement for this purpose.

Ankle joint extension is vital in speed walking, running and jumping activities because it provides the final push in propelling the body forward or upward as needed. This includes jumping in volleyball and basketball, diving, ski jumping, ballet, the high jump and long jump. In running and speed walking, ankle joint extension can create up to 50% of the force needed to propel you forward for maximum speed. That's why this action is important in sports such as track, soccer, tennis, lacrosse and other activities that involve sprinting.

More explosive sports may build calf muscle definition, but you won't see an increase in calf muscle mass. If you're looking for maximum mass development, bodybuilding is the answer.

Leg Press Calf Raise

Sit in an incline leg press machine with your glutes and lower back in firm contact with the seat pads.

Place the balls of your feet a comfortable width apart at the bottom edge of the resistance platform so that your heels are free to move.

Keep your toes pointed straight or slightly out. Your legs should be straight or very slightly bent but never locked.

Grip the machine's side handles to stabilize your upper body after you release the platform.

Inhale and hold your breath as you extend your feet at a slow to moderate rate of speed through an approximate 30 – 45 degree range of motion. Hold the fully extended position for 1 – 2 seconds to maximize the contraction.

Exhale as you return under control till you feel a slight stretch in your calves. Pause momentarily and then repeat.

To prevent your feet from slipping, wear shoes with good traction and be sure the surface of the resistance platform isn't slippery. The balls of your feet should stay in firm contact at all times.

Workout Tips

For safety and to ensure an adequate range of motion, do this exercise slowly or at a moderate rate of speed. If you do the movement quickly, you may fully straighten your legs and lose contact with the resistance platform.

The calf raise on a leg press machine is best suited for development of strength and mass through a shortened range of motion. If you fully extend your feet, you'll increase the possibility of your feet slipping off the platform. Limit your range of motion to ensure that your feet remain in contact at all times.

Avoid the exercise if the machine's platform or the soles of your shoes are smooth. Your chances of slipping increases greatly and the potential for severe injury can be quite high.

Be sure to keep your legs straight during execution, but don't lock or hyperextend your knees. This can be potentially dangerous, especially if your legs are slightly bowed when completely extended.

Hold your breath to stabilize your body and maximize your focus on ankle joint action. When you exhale on the return, control the movement at all times. Never completely relax as you could lose control of the platform.

Don't lower the resistance platform too quickly or bounce in the bottom position. This increases your chance of injury and the possibility of your feet slipping off the platform.

Primary Muscles Involved

The gastrocnemius, a two headed muscle that crosses both the ankle and knee joints and thus has an action at each end, shapes the upper portion of the back of your lower leg. Each head is clearly visible when the muscle is well defined. The soleus is slightly wider than the gastrocnemius and lies mostly underneath it. When well developed, this muscle can be seen to the sides of and slightly below the gastrocnemius.

Collectively, the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles are known as the calf muscles or the triceps surae muscle group. At its upper end, the gastrocnemius attaches to the thigh bone (femur); at its upper end, the soleus attaches to the tibia and fibula. They combine into the Achilles tendon at the lower end to attach to the heel bone (calcaneus).

Muscle / Joint Actions

In ankle joint extension, your feet move away from your shins. The gastrocnemius is most powerful when your legs are straight; the soleus is equally powerful regardless of knee position. The straighter your legs and the greater the weight, the more you'll work your gastrocnemius.
